Prometheus is a 2012 science fiction film directed by Ridley Scott, as a fifth installment in the "A L I E N" film franchise.
Its described by the film critic Roger Ebert as, " Prometheus is a magnificent science-fiction film, all the more intriguing because it raises questions about the
origin of human life. It's in the classic tradition of golden age sci-fi, echoing "Alien" (from 1979), but creating a world of its own."
The film is set in the 21st century and centers on the crew of the spaceship Prometheus as it follows a star map discovered among the artifacts of several ancient Earth cultures.
Seeking the origins of humanity, the crew arrives on a distant world and discovers a threat that could cause the extinction of the human race.
In 2089, two archaeologists discover a star map inside a cave in Scotland that matches many others from several unconnected ancient cultures. They interpret this as an invitation
from humanity's forerunners, the "Engineers", perhaps the creators of mankind.
Peter Weyland, the elderly boss of Weyland Corporation, funds an expedition to follow the map to the distant moon LV-223 aboard the scientific vessel Prometheus.
The ship's crew travels in stasis while the android/cyborg David monitors their voyage.
David acts as the ship's butler and maintenance man. It is designed to be indistinguishable from humans, and begins to develop "its own ego, insecurities, jealousy and envy".
Arriving on the undiscovered planet in 2093, the mission director informs the crew of their mission to find these "Engineers", but to not to make contact without permission.
The spaceship lands on the barren, mountainous surface near a large artificial structure, which a team quickly starts to explore.
Inside this alien structure they find strange stone cylinders, a monolithic statue of a humanoid head, and the decapitated corpse of a large alien, thought to be an Engineer.
The crew finds other alien bodies, leading them to surmise the species is now extinct.
Some of the expedition team members grow uncomfortable with these discoveries and decide to return back to the spaceship, but some of them become stranded and lost inside
the alien structure.
David, who is also part of the expedition crew, secretly takes an alien cylinder from the structure, while some of the remaining cylinders begin leaking a dark liquid.
Back onboard the spaceship, David investigates the alien cylinder and the strange liquid inside and makes an extraordinary discovery.
