Mars

9x12 on Strathmore paper

(Pattern Used: Vogue 9097)

This one was a LONG time in the making. While I didn't share it on DA, I traced his face/shoulders to do full-colour pictures on three kinds of paper to test their properties, then traced and fully coloured it twice more to test layers for skin tone, and upon mirroring that learned that his face was super skewed to one side and then had to get THAT fixed before moving it to the proper paper in the end (it's still skewed, but better than it was). So this was my seventh time drawing this specific picture, sixth time colouring it. I am so happy to be done with it. (Those who have me on Facebook: rejoice, for this is the last time I'm forcing you to look at it.)

My first time drawing/colouring realistic fire. On the bottom-left side I was following the picture pretty well and am really pleased with it, but by the time I hit the upper-right side I was getting really grumpy and got lost somewhere in the photo, tried to wing it, and it didn't turn out as well. That being said, for a first attempt, it could have gone a lot worse. (However, next time I'll draw the flames and THEN trace the background, as there are lots of visible unused lines.)

I'm happy with the fire. I'm happy with the background. I'm decently pleased with Aaron. Then it looks like I did a really cruddy job slapping them together in Photoshop. Nothing is interacting with each other. It might have been better if I'd outlined him in gold instead of white. I see where I went wrong with the fire border (changing plans halfway through). I guess after the pattern pieces I should put some time into learning how to join characters to backgrounds. >.>

Anyway! Associations with Mars include the colour red (obviously), the element of iron (only really used in the symbol on his lapel pin), the element of fire, and the plant ginger (the flower in his breast pocket). The moniker "God of War" also fits him uncomfortably well. The animal associated with Mars is the basilisk and that wouldn't work, as Aaron has herpetophobia (for snakes in particular), so I left the animal out of this one.

A nice companion piece for the Huevember fire picture, perhaps?

Didn't manage to kill off any of my Promarkers with this one. Maybe next time.

Done with Promarkers and Prismacolor brush markers (Copic for the hair and skin), white Gellyroll, and Micron inking pen. Not nearly as multi-media as the past couple have been.
