Pollution
~Much like raccoons with the waste dumps on land, these mermaids took to polluted waterways with terrifying aptitude. They're often found around port cities and fishing wharves. Some communities welcome them as they help clear the waters, but others worry their presence suggests their city is dirty and drive them off.~

Maybe I wanted to point out the absolutely deplorable state we're leaving our oceans in. Maybe I just wanted to draw a mermaid based on a raccoon. The world will never know.

(This is not based on The Little Trashmaid, but I am very familiar with that comic and adore her. <3 I did make sure to glance through some of the comics again to make sure I wasn't subconsciously copying anything. If anyone's not familiar with it I definitely recommend it!)

I like to think that, just like how kids make castles out of old tires (or was that just us?), these guys actually build dens/lodges out of them and some of the ones in more polluted areas have full networks with interconnecting tunnels. (They definitely all live in communes, none of this fighting-for-territory nonsense. These little scallywags are sociable.)

So yeah. These guys are 100% based on how raccoons technically evolved for a different environment but then when dumps showed up they took to them like a fish to water (pun completely intended) and now it's almost surprising to see them in their original habitat. It was weird trying to design a fish based on a creature known for being super fluffy.

Done with a mix of Marabu Aqua Inks, Reeves watercolor, Polychromos, Higgins Eternal ink, Molotow Liquid Chrome, white Gellyroll...and I think that's it? (Nope, had some Prismacolor Premier.)
