One Colour Challenge - White

Challenge time! I let myself have a little fun for once.

The point of this challenge is to not only create a piece using only a single colour (which I've done plenty of times before), but instead to create it using EVERY SINGLE ART SUPPLY YOU OWN of that colour. And only those art supplies. This challenge was created by DrawingWiffWaffles. I definitely recommend checking her out on Youtube! Her videos never fail to get me itching to draw.

I've seen people do these challenges and I absolutely love them and definitely wanted to take a crack at it, but I just couldn't get the inspiration for any one colour, plus I didn't want to accidentally copy someone.

Then I realized that I hadn't seen anybody use white.

One of the infuriating things about traditional art is that my whites are never white enough. They're either not opaque enough or too warm-toned/cool-toned or they pick up the medium underneath and take on that colour and all around it's just a hassle at least 50% of the time. So I thought I could use those problems to my advantage and create a piece using all of my white art supplies, using the different opacity levels for different tones and textures and see what I could come up with. (And what I came up with was a mermaid, as usual.)

This piece was indeed a hassle. After days of working on the sketch I finally get it to a point I like it and the VERY FIRST LINE the calligraphy nib catches the paper and sprays white ink all over her face (and mine). Such is my life. But! I think I overcame the challenges in the end. I know it's not as clean a job as I could have done with normal supplies, but that's the point of a challenge, right?

ZIG Wink of Stella (okay so this technically isn't white but it's also not any other colour and the glitter in it could technically be white so it's one of those "I don't have to include this but I can if I want to" ones and I wanted to and I used it to butcher the background <3 )
Strathmore 400 series Black Mixed Media paper (which is fantastic and I highly recommend it).

Anyway, this moonlit cutie patootie was doodled before shifts and while on break at work, and I'm glad I got this challenge out of the way. There are lots of others I'd like to try, but it's my day off now so I have to focus on commissions.
