Since I've been stuck home with Covid I've spent a lot of time with my new sketchbook (and oh boy I can NOT express how good it is to be working on real paper again). While my brain's been really fuzzy (and downright stupid at times) I did manage to get some sketches done. Most Sam (with the occasional counterpart), but we did get a Leost thrown in for the first time in years.
So this is a mix of the terrible sketchbook paper and the new sketchbook made with 65 lb cardstock (which is what I prefer to sketch on).
I normally use 110lb cardstock when I make my sketchbooks but tried out the 65 lb this time and I'm finding it's actually holding together a lot better. I think the 110lb was too stiff and so kept trying to pop out of the glue when I turned the page, but the 65lb is soft enough to bend a little at the binding and stick to the glue. It still handles the marker decently well (not as well as marker paper but enough for a sketchbook), is smooth enough for the fine liners (which was my main issue with the other paper), and can be erased multiple times before it starts acting up. I can use dip pens with it, light water washes (it warps a little but doesn't tear up), and can generally just mess around, which is what I use my sketchbooks for. I like being able to turn a sketch into something a little more when the inspiration hits without having to break out the lightboard and good paper.
