4 Years already! Wow, time goes fast.
Sarah, Thank you for coming back, and for your kind words. It's great to enjoy your visit once again. And it's an undescribable feeling, to see that years after making it, my work is still seen and enjoyed.
I would like to ask you a question: after 4 years, do you see Substantia any differently? Is there something you saw in it now, that you had not seen the first time?
Feel free to come back any time, as often as you want. You don't need to wait another 4 years.

haha it's just that i haven't been active on deviant for quite some time now, i actually heard some music that reminded me a lot of Substantia and really had to watch it again
and being honest yeah it does seem different watching it again, now i feel like i fully understand the meaning behind it and appreciate the animation work behind it as i'm studying animation myself now.
i'll be sure to visit deviant a lot more often!

Most beautiful film/animation I ever seen on DeviantART. The scenario, the textures, the music, all is great and make the perfect match! I felt many different emotions viewing this, at the end I was totally under the charm.

No problem, Substantia really deserves it. I think that maybe there was something up with the 'most popular' viewing system because I couldn't see it in the first few pages. But anyway I was really glad I found it and was sure to fave it.

I finally got to watch it! . Brilliant.
The problem seems to be exclusively a Firefox/DA issue - I can play other flash movies in Firefox no problem and your movie plays fine in Internet Explorer. Wierd .

Um . . . WOW!!!
I have to say this is quite possibly the most beautiful piece of animation I have ever witnessed.
The way the concepts flow so smoothly together like water, the visualizations simply breathtaking, The meaning behind it; simple perfection, the cycle, the death, the life, the love, the beauty. This is truly a masterpiece, and brainchild with the power to hold pure wonder in it's hands.

Well your very welcome, It was well worth my time, someday I aspire to animate like you do, but I simply don't have the money right now to afford the programs I learned to use in school such as maya and 3Dmax. That and I'm still in college learning how, but still an amateur like me needs work like yours to look up to.
π: 0 β©: 1
mayec In reply to Pickles4LES [2008-10-14 06:49:27 +0000 UTC]
If it's what you wanna do, don't wait one more day and start on it right now!
Money is not an excuse. See if there are any free PLE's (Person Learning Edition) of 3ds max and Maya. I'm sure there is one for Maya, don't know about Max.
Another option you have is to take a look at Blender. It's an open-source and free 3D software, and very nice animations have been done with it.

Pickles4LES In reply to mayec [2008-10-14 07:00:33 +0000 UTC]
Really? I will look into it, I have tried several free programs, such as Kirkathia and Google Sketchup and found them all tiresome, and deficient. But I have heard good things about Blender I just didn't know it was free, and I'm pretty sure both of the student editions for max and maya are both $100+ so I will find a way it just might take a while.

Thats a great sequence, extreme close up to extreme wide shot.
It looks great, its shot great (if you can call it that in 3D heh), its cut great, I love the sound design, and you could write novels about the story.
Fav. for sure.

mayec In reply to Qwid [2008-10-12 17:21:13 +0000 UTC]
Thanks a lot! I'm happy that you use the word "shot" even though it's 3D. I try to plan my 3D camera-work and editing close to the way I would go about making a live-action shoot.

Qwid In reply to mayec [2008-10-13 01:11:15 +0000 UTC]
Well it certainly shows! Don't you hate seeing a beautifully crafted 3D piece become flat with poor camerawork. You've done yours justice

I love how the symbolism is clear, and yet open to interpretation at the same time.
It's true - once your heart has broken, little shows of affection simply run off, but as shown with the comet, you aren't hurt as easily either. But once that person comes along who is right for you, they can melt that ice - but then the cycle starts again. The human heart will forever be in that state of flux between the life-giving tear, the flowering heart, and the ice-cold heart.
