Description
Medium is markers (warning this blurb is very long)OC's of mine, Reena and Ray.
Hn, where to start...?
I've had this imagine in my head for a long long time now, i don't know how long ago i originally had the idea... four, five, six years? It's another part of the hideaway hotel universe i created.
Ray Is from whats referred to as 'The Stacks' which are essentially just cliff-like rock formations in the sea. (stacks of rocks, so the people that lived there just called them the stacks)
The folk who live there share their home with gigantic bird-like animals and each rider has a special bond with their particular bird, that is, the bird and rider just ARE. There's no, which one do you want or which one should you take. your pair.... Just ... IS. The peopel of the Stacks are considered military-esque and held as excellent strategists. They keeps themselves to themselves and most people have the sense to stay away unless invited.
Reena, on the other hand, has lived her entire life on the amphibious city. Amphibious city is fabled to be the most beautiful place in the world to live. Fabled, becuase no-one on there never leaves and nobody is ever known to have reached and gotten word back. Yet, this wandering city, that people sometimes see on the horizon and chase, only to lose it, is always vibrant and full of signs of life.
Many try to get there, much like those who dare to seek refuge at the Hideaway Hotel, the rich with far too much money and time to waste, the poor with vast dreams of better places and times... Perhaps some make it, perhaps they go insane from the chase, perhaps they are forever lost, swallowed up by the vastness of the world.
Reena, along with the other inhabitants of the city, live oblivious to the world below. It's not a metter of 'when' for them, it's a matter of 'where' One day thay could be atop a vast mountain the next they could be gently bobbing on a great ocean. Ontop of this moving mechanisim they have built farms, houses, parks, schools, hospitals EVERYTHING.
They argue amungst themselves alot, as people unable to go anywhere might, but perhaps this is deadend as they are always going somewhere, even if it's all going together.
Reena is the single daughter of a baker, whos sons went off to work on the farms the other side of the city many years ago. They hardly hear from them. Reenas mother cares for her rather sick father and so Reena runs errands for her to help, while doing the day-to-day bakery things. Pretty mundane, rountined, boring.
Ray, one day on a flight, comes across the amphibious city not far from his home. He lands rather sneakily to have a look around, searching perhaps for fame and a fortune, just pure excitement and exhilaration, or maybe it was just curiosity. Whatever it was to begin with, he found Reena. Or rather, she found him.
he was gazing out to the sea, after spending such a time upon the city, wondering when his bird would arrive to pick him up, weather it would return at all, weather it could. Where was home? how far away was he from it, how long would this last.
Reena knew he was not from this city. Reena saw him hop the barrier onto the waste pipe. Saw him wobble slightly before reaching the end. She had never seen as such before. He heard her. He turned around to see her, startled. He lost his balance. She reached to grab him. She was far too late.
The boy, falling below her for so far, blowing on a small golden whistle that made no sound that she could hear, was whisked away on a creature, the like sof which she had never seen before.
Oh yes she had seen smaller birds, little sterlungs and such around the city. But nothing like that. It was gigantic, and it's eyes had flashed golden. Its beak was cruel and cuved and its cry was the scream of a predator.
She made her way home, shakily.
That night, she could hear that bird, out there. And she couldn't help but wonder.
Every day she went to that railing and peered out, listening.
Every day he searched for that city again.
And one day, the smoke led him to the hustling city, alive and moving, like a giant hewn from rock and metal that people forgot was alive and built on.
And the flap of great wings told her he was there before she turned around. They smiled. He extended a hand, she took it, they climbed over the barrier. wobbled their way to the end of the pipe.
"Jump."
and they jumped.
