Description
Not totally happy with this by any means, but I wanted to get this design out. I've wanted an antlered doe character for a long time. So this gal was a female red deer with high levels of testosterone (resulting in antlers that were covered in velvet.) She died in a forest fire and was resurrected as a spirit with antlers made of smoke. Despite her horrific burn wounds and gruesome appearance, she is not malicious and is a spirit of protection, appearing in times of crisis to guide people to safety. She smells like wood smoke and sometimes her wounds glow like embers as well. From a distance, her image is often warped, because she gives off a lot of heat, resulting in a heat haze effect en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mirage She can vanish into a cloud of smoke so very few people ever see her up close. Feel free to draw this gal, she is fun to work with. I looked up pictures of lightning strike wounds and burns. She often appears ashy and if you were to touch her, your hand would come away with a powdery gray residue. Her wounds are random, healing and reappearing over the entirety of her body. She will look different from month to month. The flame nestled between her antlers is her soul.Related content

Holy moly
Your art is goals, like, I'm not even kidding--there's nothing I don't like about your style XD
This girl is absolutely amazing <333 Her history and entire design is wonderfully thought out; I can't get enough of characters with lots of lore or interesting backstory Β
Tbh, if I saw this in the forest at twilight, I'd be pretty freaked out lolΒ
Do you have any names for her?Β

Awwww, you're gonna make me blush!!! YOU ARE TOO KIND! Thank you =^-^=
I would probably freak too, her antlers are made out of smoke but she still has very sharp hoofsies and she is quite large!
She doesn't have any names. Deer and hooved animals generally don't have names so she is just colloquially called the Hind of Embers^^

Ooooooooooooooooooooooooooooh, this design is simply lovely! =,D I love all of your mythology-type characters; not classic supernatural beings, but spirits of a special sort that I can totally fall in love with! Wonderful loreworking and art! <333

Thank youuuuuu. This gal has been rattling around in my head for awhile. Her design is highly variable, so I just wanted to get her idea down before I forgot anything XD I'm thinking about having Storm meet her at some point. I also like making "scary but good" characters too XD Thanks so much for the support of her!

That's the advantage of having a spirit character; the design can chance very easily and be chalked up to 'this is what she looks like when she's mildly upset because the offering wasn't to her liking.'
Do the bears/villains have any connection to fire/changing nature/messing up the natural order of things in any way? I can definitely see her existing in a similar sort of role as Dema, though far less powerful. Do you have rules for how something becomes/is a spirit/demigod in Storm's world? = O
Scary but good is fun; just because someone looks nasty doesn't mean they are! I just read Clan of the Cave Bear after raiding my dad's stash of books he read as a kid; there's this one neanderthal character who was mauled by said giant beast on top of being born deformed, yet he's one of the sweetest characters there is. [I'd recommend it as a read if you have a stiff stomach/can gloss over insane trauma. The later books give the main character a bit of a Mary-sue vibe doe. XD]

EXACTLY! Also, a lot of legendary creatures in Storm's world appear different to everyone who sees them, mainly the 7 remaining dragon lords (the gods of her world,) and also alternate forms are pretty common with enchanted/demon/spirit creatures.
Bears are actually a very peaceful race and the least combatant of the three main races (bears, canines and felines.) Genvar, the main bear baddy, was an outlier in being such a huge bag of rotten pig nipples. He was rejected by many of his own race for his violence, though he did have a number of other bear allies. Villains that are powerful enough to change the natural order of things are few and far between but they exist. The Bringer of Stillness, another of my characters, killed one of the 8 dragon lords resulting in an imbalance in the energy of Stormbreak's world, leading to random manifestations of energy into spirit or demon creatures. Normally that energy will inhabit the body of a recently deceased creature that was very emotionally charged at the time of its death, but sometimes enchanted creatures can literally spring up from the ground. The dragonlords once were quite involved in the lives of the mortal creatures. They used to be responsible for all of the spirit and demon creatures that came into existence, but ever since the death of one, the rest of the dragons have removed themselves from mortal affairs and watch the world in silence. Since the excess energy is unable to be contained by only 7 dragons, that's how you get these unchecked creations coming to be, while spirit and demon placement was once a deliberate and conscious decision made by the gods. So basically, magical BS is how spirits and such come into being. Stormbreak was actually enchanted by a grateful dragon herself, though she was born with certain qualities, like her glowey eyes and claws, so she was technically enchanted at birth. Hopefully that was somewhat readable and understandable XD
I have actually read Clan of the Cave Bear. It's one of my favorite books in fact and really sent me for a wild ride reading it. I thought it was wonderfully written and had such great and engaging characters and plot elements. I love the tribal explanations for certain practices, such as burying the dead with flowers. I particularly loved Creb and found a lot of the society of his people very interesting(besides the crazy sexism and rapey stuff) I never read the other books because I had heard they weren't very good and I kind of thought the first book stood well alone. I will probably have to read it again now you have mentioned it!
