We had just walked across the stage, were at home, and the three of us (Gerard, Frank, and me) are waiting for Bandit to get ready. She’d been taking forever. Aaron moved, like we knew he would. We weren’t all that close with him, but he was still a friend. She walked out, almost the replica of Helena. Yea. I looked it up. I stood up and grabbed her hand to drag her out the door.

“You are insane, Derrick!”

“I know!” In the car, I held her hand, squeezing it softly every now and again. Wearing a tux was more uncomfortable than I thought it would be.

I’m not going to tell you about the dance, because it was pretty hectic. A lot of kids got caught with alcohol, but we got out before they saw that we were both drunk.

“Want to hang out.. Uhh. Where you want to hang out, Der?” She slurred into my ear. “Oooo. How bouts the party at Jill’s?”

“Who’s Jill?” I managed with her breathing so close. I was anything but sober, and she was breathing so close and I could smell her perfume.

“Who cares?” And my face was turned, and her face was close. Oh god, her face was right there. And then it wasn’t. It was closer. And then I kissed her. Or she kissed me. It doesn’t matter now. Because whoever did the kissing isn’t important in retrospect to what happened next. We were in a hotel. How the hell did we get to a hotel? Oh. I’m on the bed. And her legs, oh her legs. Wrapped around my waist, lips on mine.

My shirt’s gone. Where’d my, oh shit. She was unzipping her dress. I’m getting scared by now, because what would happen if..? What really scared me was, it did.

We had sex. Sex. Wehadsexohmygodwehadfucking- oh my god. All other thoughts thrown out the window. Bandit’s a junior. But there was one thing that she wasn’t, because I’m sure I would’ve noticed if she was a virgin. But she had had sex. And hadn’t even let on to anything close to a boyfriend…

I turned over. We’re still in the hotel bed, and still naked. I tried to go back to sleep but I heard her gasp and ask me what happened.

“Do you not remember us getting wasted last night? Because other than that, nothing TOO major-”

“Oh fuck.” Her eyes became plates and her head lifted off the pillow. “We had sex.”

“… And that about sums up graduation.” Her face crumpled, and tears started flowing out of her eyes. “And I would hug you right now, but that would be very awkward considering we’re still naked.”

She laughed. I made her laugh. That’s score one.. Well. Score two for me.

“So. Who’s going to get up with the sheet and who’s going to lay on the bed naked.” It was a statement, I think to prepare me to be left naked on the bed. But I stood up, naked as a jaybird, and she almost screamed when she covered her eyes.

“We had sex last night. I’m not too concerned that you’ll see my wang, Bandit Lee.” I love making her wince.

Once dressed, we ignored it. For two months, we didn’t talk about us doing something like that. But then she called and told me something that has chilled me to this day.

“I’m pregnant.”

“Wow.”

“Come over.”

“I don’t think you realize that I wasn’t even aware it happened until the morning after, Gerard.”

“I don’t care. You ruined my baby’s life. With a baby!” She was sitting in a corner, waiting for her dad to vent himself dry of words and tears.

“My life is not ruined.”

“I know. But honey..”

“Are you even sure it’s gonna be mine, Ban?”

“Who else’s would it be?”

“Well. Uh. I don’t know.. But you weren’t..” I cleared my throat. “ You weren’t a..”

“One other time. Six months ago. And you. She’s yours.”

My heart broke hearing those words. I have a child.

“She?”

“I feel like it will be a she. I want a daughter.. Not want. But since it’s there, I want a girl.”

“Are you going to keep it?”

“I do want to. Dad?” He looked up, removing a tear stained face from a hand mask.

“What?”

“Would you be mad if I kept the baby?”

“If you do, I will be there. Because I’m not a total dickwad.”

“Keep him. Or her. Just.. I’ll be here, and you know that, but for god’s sakes. I need to talk to Frank.” He grabbed his keys and kept his promise, leaving us alone in the living room.

“I’m so sorry.” She said.

“I’m sorry. I didn’t have to get drunk, or hard, but I did.”

“I wanted to have sex with you though. I planned on it. I wanted to know what it was like to kiss you. Just curious, but then it was more once I knew.”

“Oh.”

“But Derrick?”

“Yea?” I looked up, into her eyes, and we both started blubbering. She pulled me into a hug, and did the same thing that got us into this problem in the first place. She whispered in my ear:

“We’re going to have a baby.”
