Description "Bokeh" is japanese for blur. Bokeh photography is an
effect caused by a very shallow depht of field, this is
achieved with a large diaphragm (1.4 or more).
The blurred background lights can be shaped with a
very simple process.

There are a lot of resources/examples on the web, just google "bokeh".

Software: Gimp under Ubuntu 10.04

I have been trying to create shaped bokeh all day.But the finished products I have seen so far on the DIY website all look like whole photos. However my shaped bokeh final photo, has an extreme vignette border in the same shape I cut out. I tried using the 50mm setting at f/5 on my zoom lens (18-105mm) and several other lengths. Does it only work with fix zoom lenses with small f-stops? Is there an f-stop threshold when making shaped bokeh photos?

You're right, I'm sorry I didn't try it with a large telephoto before publishing the guide.
Did you upload any of your results?
I'll try to correct the guide. I'll make a "cheat sheet" tonight to understand the pertinent optics better.
I'll get back to you as soon as I can explain this.
It would be very illustrative if you could try it with another lens.
Thank you for your comment and I'm sorry you worked all day on my account.

Oh it was no problem, I love experimenting, it's the best way to learn things. Managed to understand the inside camera technics quite well and learn more about the photo taking process.

You know, I'd heard of how to do this before, but no one had a visual guide. Now I think I could actually try it--thanks!
