I can't remember whether or not this was inspired by that borg-tech enhanced Romulan mining ship from the Star Trek reboot, but I do like the idea of space crafts that resemble invertebrates.

Imagine that this sort of vessel would use established wormhole networks or hyperspace pathways for traversing interstellar space, and would navigate normal space with the ring of propulsion unit around the "front" of it. The tentacles can be stiffened into supports for when it rests vertically on a larger surface, for linking the craft with other vessels, or for "eating" asteroids and space debris (stuff is mineable, after all). That large segment that partially covers them can fold outward to serve as a heat disperser.

By the way, this ship was created and is used by humans, not aliens. Why would humans think a spaceship with tentacles was a good idea? Hell if I know! Those smaller crafts buzzing around it are also built and piloted by humans as well, and are the standard short range fighter craft for planetary defense forces.
