Description
An oldie I came across while cleaning out files. The top Skylab is mine. The bottom one- believe it or not- is NASA's. This is one from a folder of WIPs concerning the model I built for 'Nova Trek'. If anyone is interested in seeing them, I'll add a folder to my WIP folder.ΒRelated content

I recall that they added the reflective blanket later, to deal with damage that happened during launch that caused the loss of on of the large solar panels.

Yes. The original heat shield that covered that central area of the station was torn away on launch when the solar panel on one side was torn off. Luckily, once the "umbrella" was in place, the remaining panels on the other side were able to provide enough power to operate the station. Actually, the installation of the blanket/umbrella was the first real in-space repair and paved the way for later repairs like the mission that saved the Hubble telescope.

Strange that NASA would leave out the reflective shield. I could understand it if their model had both solar panels. Maybe they were lazy and just hid the missing geometry after the launch accident.Β

All I know is that they never updated their model. It wasn't just the shield. The telescope is different, the hull markings are different.Β I get the feeling the model was based on an early artist's concept instead of the real deal.
