Made it in time for Autism Awareness Month!
...barely. XD
As it seems to hurt my wrist to do much beyond either grayscale or markers, I left this in grayscale. I might try to do a marker version and see how that looks since I do want it in color, but I wanted to put up something before April ended.
Anyway, this was inspired by an image I saw a while back of a kid holding up a piece of paper which basically read: "The entire world is freaking out over a change in routine; not so easy, is it?"
I wanted to do a drawing to reflect on that without being as snarky, and after going through about four different ways to do it (and restarting about two times), I finally came up with this.
So basically, all of the extroverts (and even some introverts) are having a tough time adjusting and keeping up with the "stay at home" mandate of self-quarantine. People are still going out and not changing their lives (putting the health of others at risk), and others are trying to revert to their prior "routines" even though the curve hasn't been flattened yet (at least here in the USA).
It's not just the quarantine disruption of the routine, but the social distancing aspects of it, too.
Now that neurotypicals have experienced not being packed in shopping areas like sardines, and a required distance to be maintained between each other, they're coming to the realization that all of us on the spectrum have (probably) had:
It's so much less stressful not to be packed up against one another.
Crowded places like supermarkets are a nightmare for us on the spectrum (some of that is sensory, but another is the "packed like sardines" feel of crowds and lines).
We've been (hyper) aware of all the crowding in these places and how anxiety-causing it is, and now due to the virus non-spectrum folk are discovering how less stressful it is when they aren't crowded like that.
It's like...folks not on the spectrum are just so accustomed to it that now that there are social distancing restrictions, they're realizing how stressful it had actually been to be in crowded places with little to no personal space (and how less stressful it is with distancing).
It's like this virus is causing the social effect of causing people to experience what daily life is like for people on the spectrum.
"Walk a mile in my shoes", indeed.
