Description
The second helmet I've made, this time for a commission for Halloween! Now with craft foam ears and hair! The commissioner didn't want to deal with a traditional wig, so she asked me to make one out of craft foam and showed me a picture of someone else's cosplay. Now, I don't really use craft foam usually for anything more than a stripe or a small detail, so this was a interesting project. I tried several different techniques, trying to replicate the other cosplayer's work, but I really couldn't make it work. So intead I cut many, many, MANY little spikes and layered them inward over a cap I glued to the inside of the helmet. To get them to curve, I simply pulled them over my thumb several times, glued them down, and then painted them on a gradient. Craft foam isn't the way I wanted to go, but I have to say I do like the end result.Midna's helmet from The Legend of Zelda: Twilight Princess, made from pink insulation foam, paper clay, craft foam and a plastic disk.
Edit: Wow, thank you for the DD! I've been a part of DA for eight years, and this is my first Daily Deviant. I am so honored!
I almost hate to plug, but be sure to check out the rest of my gallery and my etsy store here: [link]
I'm also available for commissions, so if you think of anything you'd like, feel free to contact me for a quote!

Total awesomeness. I wish I could do something like that. Sometimes DA makes me feel like I can BARELY do any decent art. ^.^''

Haha thanks, but all it takes is practice. My first props fell apart, I melted pieces, and it just didn't look at all as good as the things I make now. I've now made props that used to intimidate me years ago, and now they're just everyday work XD Don't be afraid to fail, and fail often trying to achieve great things.

This is amazing! It looks just like the one in the game. You did a fabulous job, especially working with a technique you weren't used to!

This is amazing! As a LoZ fan, this is even more meaningful, because you took the time to get all the little details right.
The hair looks fantastic! Personally, I hate craft foam, but you've done an amazing job with the stuff.
DD well deserved!

The helmet has a lot of really well done details, it looks like it's straight out of TP right down to the etching, but what really drew me in was the hair. It stood out even from the thumbnail and it's quite well done. Knowing it was the most challenging part of the helmet and it's what drew me in, I'd say your hard work paid off But then I notice the rest of the piece helmet and really appreciate the accuracy of it and the etchings. Very nice job.

Nice! I am wondering if the cosplayer you referenced was ~NekoNariko ? Hers is the only other Midna headdress that I've seen use the wide, in-game proportions like this.

Nope, I was only given one picture from behind, but the referenced picture had craft foam for hair. NekoNariko looks like she felted a wig together. Although I do believe I've met her before at Fanime

ah, ok! Yes, her Midna has fiber hair.
Your craft foam version is surprisingly convincing!
