I love the details you added, like to the eyes of the character in the foreground and on the armor. Just wow.

Very cool work. I've inked some of Dawid's stuff and it was fun. His style is very dynamic and his lines are nicley done. What did you use the toothbrush for (kinda threw me there)

I was going to be Dawid's inker for a while, but things kept moving along for me I used the toothbrush for the gentle spatter up near the ship where the waves are, to give a kind of seaspray effect.

Oh cool! I'll have to use that sometime. I'm stuck with regular inking pens. The little bit of ink I have is spared for big jobs....I is very poor

I ink with brushes and crowquill pens, but when I started out I used tech pens like the Faber-Castell PITT artists pens... what I do is wait till I see a coupon in the Michael's flyer and use that to stock up on pens and the ink I use. Since the brushes I use are so expensive (Windsor&Newton series 7) I buy them from the Blicks online store where they're about 60% off lol: [link] and crowquill nibs can be bought loosely from a Blicks store or craft stores. In all I probably save about 75% of the cost of my materials.

I've never used any fancy cool stuff like crowquills and stuff. Sounds interesting. Can you tell me the difference in appearances between the things you've just mentioned and a regular pen from Wal-mart? I normally use ZIG pens

They're not really fancy lol but you get a lot more out of them, most importantly lineweight. You can't fluidly go from thick to thin with a technical pen or get smooth strokes that have the proper lineweight. You end up building up the lines by hand and they aren't as smooth as a brushstroke or a quill sweep.

Soundz cool anyway. **Stands in Genyu pose** I NOW WANT QUILLS........ AND INK!!!! **stands in krillin's coward position (on the ground)** I think I might be afraid of splashage, diping in ink and all. Has that ever happen to you?
I see what you mean about lineweight and stuff. Hey, have you ever used micron pens. I heard they're pretty good, but I've never tried them.

mechangel2002 In reply to QuantumSpectre [2007-05-27 16:46:37 +0000 UTC]
I never get "splashage" but I have had drops here and there if I put too much ink on it when dipping. The key is to dip it and give it a tiny shake it not only brings the ink to the very tip so that it flows when you touch the paper, but it gets rid of a little excess back into the bottle. My problem is sticking my hand in the wet ink >_<
Um.... micron pens aren't professional but I use tech pens in certain things like building details (the 005) because then I don't have to worry about waiting for the fine lines to dry before I do lines in a different direction. Also Microns don't have india ink meaning they'll turn green or yellow with time.

Thanks for the info man!!! You're so totally cool. I think I could learn a lot from you. I definately want you on my friend's list. Great to get tips from a professional. Hopefully one day I'll become an animator or comic artist too. I'm gonna keep going until my art is superub. Thankx again

You do need a credit card to use Blicks, but you really get the best out of that store
I order everything except my ink and nibs from there now. All my sketchbooks, portfolios, everything... the only thing I haven't bought that I really want now is a lighttable o3o

👍: 0 ⏩: 1
mechangel2002 In reply to phatalphd [2007-03-09 01:55:48 +0000 UTC]
Not at all, though I'm still learning how to handle spatter myself Take the toothbrush, and either dip the tip gently in the ink or use a dropper to put ink on the tip of the brush (not too much or it drips as I've learned), then point it down towards the paper, and flick the bristles with your fingertip or thumb gently. If you do it when the brush is parallel to the paper, it produces the directional spatter that I did, and if you point it more at the paper it;ll give you more gravitational drops.

Nice page here. Solid inking and I like the little extra touches like the splash area in the upper right portion where the pencils show mainly black but you too the liberty to add a white splash to it. It's the little additions that stay true to the pencils that I enjoy. Makes inking more fun.

Yay, someone noticed! XD I decided I screwed up on the water and it didn't look like water... I thought a bit of sea spray would help, so I added some white spatter to effect the black, and some black spatter to show up on the rest of the ship but the black didn't work so well.... mainly cause I had trouble keeping it from drippin on the page.... one of the big splash marks actually has white all the way around it because the black ink dripped from the toothbrush onto the page
