Description
This was one of my warmup sketches, I got carried away with it. Testing out my Mustek scanner now that I have it on my desk and plugged in -- I'm not sure how to use it other than for general scanning, I need to figure out how to get a better res from it.I wanted to try something new with my pinup art, like the awesome sketches I see some of the Drink and Draw Social Club do. I'm still too nervous to take my markers to anything larger than a sketch card though. And I put panties on her because I hadn't thought that far ahead when I started sketching it
Total time was about 30 minutes from sketch to ink. 2mm pencil and then various Copic Liners (I love those things, mum got me a set for my birthday back in September). No ref, just my imagination. Was tempted to put a tattoo on her but it didn't look right. I had to clean up her left hand a little too... it was hit or miss lol.
..... and I just realized I forgot to detail the grip of the sword. Ugh.

Katana's generally have a loooooong curve to the blade, that follows through slightly into the handle, which is wrapped. I agree with above, the lines as always are tight, crisp and the variety is super duper (as Jon Chad would say.) Classic "broke-back" pose however...poor girls spine is twisted!

No, its a real pose lol. I had a friend try it because I hadn't been sure it looked right. The problem is there's an extra detail line in there I need to take out XD

Some talented stuff.. I really dig the line weights and flowing lines here...man from the holding line around the figure to the fine lines ..... , we have to work together again. Great stuff!

LOL glad you see it that way
what was your thought process with choosing those weights as it feels very crowquill-ish ? Was it a specific thought towards a technique ( this type of line gives this type of feel for x effect) or was it just a happy organic kinda thing ( ie: this line just looks damn cool so here we go)
just curious, want to learn from very capable folks.

I find myself handling my pencil and my Copic Liners like I would a crowquill, putting pressure at certain parts of the strokes to make the lineweights. I guess its just imprinted on my memory lol
Dude I have so much to learn from you

I spent a while looking for the sword. Too long, but maybe that's just my eyes bothering me. The face and body type aren't your usual style, but I like that powerful build she has; that she's athletic. Very striking, since you didn't use reference.

It's a katana >.> or supposed to be lol. What's my usual type XD I didn't want her to be a skinny minny

geezone In reply to mechangel2002 [2010-01-26 22:19:55 +0000 UTC]
Nope. Not skinny, but your usual style has to do with a recognizable look. This pinup and Out of this world have been very fresh and different from each other; foregoing the usual short hand you use to describe a pinup. Faces, for example. Different head shapes, hair and lines to describe features.

I guess my style is changing I didn't put as much detail into it as I normally would too.

Really nice, and that pose is really tough to nail too. The scan looks really good. Did you clean up any artifacts after the scan or is that just how awesome that scanner is?

Nice work! I have a Mustek... If you have any questions... feel free to ask. I have had mine for about 5 years now, and it is still scanning away just fine!

How do you get it to scan ABOVE 299 dpi
π: 0 β©: 1
RolandParis In reply to mechangel2002 [2010-01-25 20:26:02 +0000 UTC]
On the scan options, you should be able to choose greyscale, color or lineart, and then a few lines down, there should be a choice for dpi. Mine goes from 100 to I think 800, in 100 dpi increments. If you do not have this option, I would go to the mustek site and download the driver from there. The one that comes on the disk is usually pretty limited...

mechangel2002 In reply to RolandParis [2010-01-25 20:29:36 +0000 UTC]
I installed the driver from the site rather than the old one on the disc lol. There's no option showing up for me to select the resolution just 3 options like "Fine" and "superfine" (which was the 299 dpi lol).

that may be why... call customer service and ask if there is a way to set the dpi higher. There really should be a way....

On the main page of my Scan settings it says:
Scan Mode - gray
Scan Source - Reflective
Resolution - 400
Descreen - None
I just checked the resolution settings, and it can be set at 100 dpi all the way to 9600 dpi!!
