Description
‘The Hex’ is a term given to a rapidly spreading nanovirus, named for the signature hexagon patterns it creates on the skin of its victims. The virus itself is spread through fluid contact from person to person, through blood, saliva and other fluids. The only major symptom that it presents with are the hexagon-shaped lines the virus reorganizes human tissue into. At this stage, there are no major health risks currently known. However, in later stages, it begins to grow carbon structures from the bones of the victim. These often appear as horns or spikes, which give the name ‘Hex’ it’s second meaning, as those with the disease can take on a demonic appearance. This stage of the disease can be quite deadly, since the virus begins to metabolize the organs and tissues to build these constructs. Once someone enters this stage, they often have only months to live. At this time, there are treatment options available, but they are extremely costly.
The virus was first discovered among the homeless population living along the shores of Los Angeles. It spread quickly, though researchers noticed it was mostly spread among the poor and working class. Without knowing how to treat it, city officials reacted by building a wall around most of downtown. They set up checkpoints to keep anyone infected inside the walls. This walled-in area was named ‘Lost Angeles’ by the media, and the unofficial nickname stuck.
Those infected with the Hex began to organize protests to demand treatment and for the walls to be torn down. While the treatments did exist, the singular company in control would not treat the infected for free, and the virus grew. Before long, the protests turned violent, and protest groups became militias. Law enforcement was pulled out, and a new company stepped up to the plate. Haeven formed their Elite program to combat the growing unrest.
