One of the old jokes I used to make with my Partner in Fandom Crime was that it was Jeremy Cricket he squished. Of course, my opinion of that theory was "GOOD, I HATED THE LITTLE BASTARD, ANYWAY" so I probably need a conscience myself...
(Also, I just always have to think, Stephanie doesn't seem to be the prime example to learn a rather non-violent moral system, does she? SHE KEEPS A BAT IN HER VAN.)

If it was Jeremy Cricket he squished everything about gaining a conscience would make more sense ~ as fun as the lightning is it isn't overly plausible.
(don't worry - I didn't like him that much either. 
OMG YES. MAYBE SHE NICKED HIS LASER AND HID IT IN HER WEAPONS STASH. Actually this might seem a bit random, but one thing that really bugged me in SC2 was the lack of Newton and Stephanie at the end of the film. You'd think if you're friend had been smashed to pieces you'd go visit. (also they were almost like parents to him). Way to add to his feelings of rejection and loneliness.

I think Pan and I pretty much had a headcanon that Stephanie and Newton simply couldn't get to him after the ceremony before the press did.
In general when I tried to write a fic of what happened between the jewel heist--ceremony it became impossible once it got to figuring out how to convince a government that a robot could be sentient. (I KEPT on trying to throw out realistic expectations of the perceptions society and all that...but I kind of needed it for my own stories...)
(Yes, it may be sad to have SC headcanon, but darnit, we--- uh, we are sad.)
And now Stephanie keeping the laser is also part of this headcanon. IT JUST MAKES TOO MUCH SENSE.

Oh you're not sad. I have headcanon too. I also like to write fanfic as well as 'original' stuffs. Fanfic is too fun to not try.
You're probably right about the press getting there first. Makes a lot of sense that.
As for the sentience thing... Some people would be easy to convince other's would probably condemn the idea altogether before it was proved. I just wonder if Newton had to tell another terrible joke before Number 5 got that citizenship.
