Description
hey folks! goddamn things are hectic over here. i meant to post this last week , but my server has been down since thursday, and i only got it back now.so, without any further distractions, ill now introduce my film. the film title im still unsure of, but for now the name is Modelling sucks. basically, its about this rookie male model who discoveres that the biz isnt for him, and is enraged when he is asked to pose nude. his life heads in a downspiral of tragedy and extreme overacting. im timing it to a beat that me and my friends made, and the film will play out like the DJ Qbert film, wave twisters, in the way of everytime the audio scratches, so does the animation. you'll see.
so, these dudes shown here are some of the secondary characters. they have been assembled for animation, and as soon as i get someone to animate it for me, ill post up the tests too. im having alot of fun with it, but , lemme tell you, its a lot of work!
now, for crits from you guys, can i get you to point out my flaws? please?!
thanks kids, more to come!

All i can say is that i agree withy German and Kyle. You should improve with a new style. Your actual style is the best. ItΒ΄s good.

thanks for the imput dirk! i love how everyones being vocal on this!
im loving this new style , it gets me excited to draw. i still like the old shit i did, but im not having fun drawing like that anymore. if i cant make fun outta it, i dont want to do it. im not abandoning anything, im just taking it to a new level. im taking things i learned, and really, all thats changing is the linework, going from sharp edges to s-curves, but its lacking emotion for some reason. practice! gaah.

Fun is very important. And when you think the new style makes more sense for you then you should do it.
ItΒ΄s hard to switch from sharp edges to s-curves and i see the chaos in the faces.

yeah, but nobody is able to keep up constant work without being paid to do it, right? like, its alot of work, and to be honest, you still crank out tons more than me, it shows dedication. clearly you love doing what you do, but you sound like you need to take a break, dont wanna exhaust yourself.

I tried to take breaks with fotography... but it was the same and now iΒ΄m addicted with both and have the same probs in both parts.
I drank too much alcohol the last time and that really scares me a bit.

I'm with German. Don't let your desire to get a new style going ruin what you had in your drawings: personality and appeal.

oh, i fully agree that these characters are lacking character, but im having a blast drawing like this.... im still new to the style, so its real hard, but at least its a challenge, which is what im looking for. i diddnt have that with my previous drawings, and to be honest, i was bored as hell with it.
any tips kyle? i dont really have a clue as to what im doing, im just having fun with it. i wanna reference stuff, but at the same time i dont as i find that referencing leads to mimicking, something that i do often.
thanks for being vocal! its greatly appreciated!

My suggestion is to think hard about getting the character's feelings and personality as you're drawing them. Then the stylistic stuff won't be arbitrary. The goal is to make the audience understand the characters and you can use that to give you direction.
Thanks for letting me be so vocal! Watching you develop and experiment is exciting and it's nice to find you s open to crits and suggestions!

oh, i fully appreciate people being vocal! i like getting this kind of response, it gives me something to think about!
ive been thinking real hard about personalities, but all i can get is anger, disgust, and sadness outta them. id like to get some other expressions, but i only have something like 5 hours a week to work on this, and its in my spare time. i agreed to do this contest with work, and i signed a contract to get it done, so i dont think ill be able to put too much more into it. i think most of the characters will be only on the screen for like 5 seconds each, so for expressions, this films pretty much a write off. it is, on the other hand, making me want to make another film after this, and drawing like this is making me super stoked to do more, and it makes me excited to know that theres an audience willing to watch!
its a real blast trying to draw like this, because no pose is the same. something im not used to. in my previous style, i found that it was hard pushing expressions, so i diddnt. im a real stubborn person at times, adn i wasnt willing to try new things. only now am i more open to ideas.....
kinda funny how this will probably be my last gig working in animation too, just as i start working on something.... im starting to learn that i like animation, but working in it isnt my thing.

ahh, its just the little things. lying, keeping secrets, red tape. that, and well, i dont like redrawing the same characters over and over again. im a real lazy fellah, and im starting to think that illustration is more my thing. i think i can handle that. i can see myself being more of the gallery type. making pics, selling them, holding a party for it. i really like animation , but ive been lied to way too much in the past year by two completely different studios, from both the west coast and the east.
i still like animation, i just cant see myself being involved in it for much longer. im sure ill be back in it here and there, but nothing id want to do my whole fife.

Hm, yeah, I can understand that. I'm just disappointed because I think animation needs more guys with striking designs like yours-- But then maybe you could go the Baseman and Hirschfeld route and have animation based on your design style after it's established... I'm just thinking out loud.

hahaha, oh, i agree, itd be amazing to actually have that option to go the baseman route, now thatd be cool! im still planning on doing the occasional short film from time to time, that sounds ideal. nobody shoving contracts and deadlines in my face. just my own stuff, and plug the hell outta it in festivals. this film im working on now , apperently, will be in 4 festivals ( i can remember three, the ottawa film fest, spike and mikes, and a nicktoons fest). if theres a demand for more, id definately persue more of it.
to be honest kyle, ive been thinking about what ive been saying over the last few, and i dont think id want to focus on just one thing. i mean, i just like art in general. ive been wanting to do some stop motion, and ill be opening the film with some. i love animation, but like i said, animation is rocky ground. both jobs ive worked at now have been very sketchy. i dont like being laid off for a week or two without notice. id like to run the show, if at all possible.
maybe one day?

hmmm, push the personalities more, great expressions, but it needs a bit more of their personalities.
i can't tell, but the bodies may be lacking the same construction as the heads. post some bodies and i'll give you a good critique.

THANK YOU! i love a good crit. i agree, i need to push that alot more, but im unsure how! care to help? as for full bodied poses, im not doing that in this film, its too much effort! i only have 4 weeks to do this film, then i head back home, so like , i gotta crank shit out fast! its going to be limited, i warn you.
come on aim!

german-s In reply to megachron [2006-05-05 18:29:38 +0000 UTC]
haha, totally late for this.. but kyle nailed it.
totally think about the personalities of the people you are drawing more before you draw them.. like you, as the artist need to know who they are inside out. how will they react to anything, how do they carry themselves when they walk the street, at a party and all that mundane shit.
so when they do "do something" you totally know how they'd react to that specific moment.
at the moment, your enjoying and exploring the technical execution of these drawings, which is good because you need to know how to draw like this like a reflex. so keep on drawing like this for the fun of it, and remember to balance it with the expression/commuinication side of it, sooner then later.

im glad you like the characters, im liking the new style!

I like that song. It took me ages for find out the samples were from an episode of the Chris Elliot show. Isn't Dan the Automator canadian? Maybe I'm thinking of the other guy who works with the Gorillaz...

Fantastic designs! No flaws to point out. They might be a little too complicated to do anything more than limited animation with, but would propably suit a limited style very well, so no trouble there!
I can hardly wait to see some pencil tests!
The story sounds great as well!

hahah, thanks! to be honest, i thought itd be super busy, but the characters animate great! its all done in flash, so there wont be pencil tests ( unfortunately) ....i wish i could do this traditional, but i dont have the time or resourses to do it that way...
im animating the characters with a "powdered toastman" flow, or, the face moves, the head doesnt. it works well with this style, and it makes me laugh, so thats a plus haha.
