Description
Finally got around to photographing this, although the photo and flash really messed up the colors. Did the best I could to straighten them back out in Photoshop, but it's lacking a lot of the depth of the original oils.I really need to get my scanner working again.
Anyway... this is an oil painting, approx. 8"x12", oils, painted on a hard canvas covered notebook (front cover).
Not perfect, but I'm still learning how to control my oils. The background looks flat black here, but it's not quite. There's some red/orange glow and blues mixed in as well. Hate how his hair turned out, but since this is experimental, I'll do better on the next one.

Nice lighting. Why do I think I've seen his face before?

probably because I can only draw so many guys before I start repeating myself? Dunno.

Just think of his hair as mid-90's Bowie hair and you'll be fine!
This is lovely, by the way, and I wish I could see it in person!

Oh, I love him!! I think my OC, Flame, would be in love. Great work on his horns! And I like his hair and the flames above his head. One of my favorite parts is his eyes. Wonderful job!

Yeah, I understand what you're getting at. Photographs always mess up the real colour, especially the subtle things. I still haven't figured out how to take good pictures of my traditional work
Anyway, nice job with the oils. It's always so much different from digital, and I know that relying too much on digital sometimes makes it harder to work with traditional medium sometimes, as it's a completely different technique. But I like the horns, and the eyes. It's hard to do finer detail on a small canvas like that, especially when the brushes can only go so small and the oils refuse to cooperate
Hope to see more traditional work though, despite how much I love your digital work, it's always nice to see variety. (yes, I'm a silent watcher...
Guilty as charged...)

Actually I end up painting digitally and traditionally almost the same. A little different, but the techniques I use are pretty similar overall. Lots of thin glazes and buildups of color over tonal drawings, with saturated underpaintings.

Really? That's very interesting because my technique completely changes. I don't know how I could possibly keep my techniques the same when the medium changes. I do everything a different way depending if it's oil, acrylic, watercolour, pencil, digital, etc...

Eh, I like his hair personally. You do well with paint. <3
also, you sure seem to have a fondess of black eyes, eh? They sure are pretty.

I have a fondness for all kinds of odd eyes. Solid black, solid white, solid fire, inverted (like these), inverted iris/pupils...
Always been a fascination for me. I loved characters like Raistlin (with his golden hourglass eyes) and Morpheus (with his solid blacks with stars in them) and Gambit (inverted), as a kid.

Oh god Gambit was my favorite 'cause he was from my hometown as well as his eyes.
Maybe I should start toying around with different eyes myself...I like the fiery eyes myself.

Don't use a flash. My steph father is a professional photographer. When I take my paintings to him, we usually go outside and stand in very lightly shaded areas, to get the light and yet have nothing glaring over the picture. Usually around 3-4 in the afternoon. It works a treat.
That said, did you know that you draw the most lucious of lips ever? You do. And you paint them even more deliciously. This is really lovely.

see that's part of my problem. Digital cameras are stupid and if you don't use the flash, they come out blurry compared to when you do. I don't know why that is, but it is. So I end up having to take one with the flash, one without, and then trying to fix the glare in photoshop using the one without over the one with....
it's irritating. It's actually even worse with my graphite/pencil work. Need to find scanner cables... somewhere in this house.

Nope. Step dad uses a digital camera. It might be the quality of the camera though, that you're using. Maybe try taking it outside to photograph it outside with the flash? So the sunlight counters the flash or something?

The eyes are wonderful. They kind of suck you in, while at the same time warning you that you'll get burned.
...or at least that's how I see it.
The patch on his neck also catches my eye - the little place that seems to be paler, ringed in yellow. A shadow effect?

I hadn't thought of doing that to old binder covers. Sounds like fun. It is also good to see you working with oils again.

Is the canvas covered notebook this is painted on something you bought or something you put together? Just curious.
My eye is drawn most to the highlights on his collar, here. In particular the one on our left and below his chin looks very oil painty to me; you can go from the extreme light to the extreme dark in such a small space. I think maybe his hair just needs more darker strands shot through it.

I bought it at Target (the notebook) actually. It's a "Red n' Black" brand, lined, hardcover notebook. The cover just happens to have a canvas like texture. Our air conditioning was broke one day this summer, and it was too hot to work at the computer, so I just started gessoing things. Small canvases, etc. I had this notebook on my desk and thought: gee, I'd like to paint you...
You do funny things when it's nearly 110 indoors in the shade.
