Description I apologize for the following:

The size of this image when viewed in full

and for not uploading it under fan art. Turns out that there IS no fan art section for traditional mixed media type art stuff. Maybe they think no one would put that amount of time into it. I don't know.

Either way, just to be clear, YES this is intended as Fan Art. I'm sharing it here because I know there are some people who would be very interested in it, and because altered books are a hobby of mine, when I'm not painting faerie people. I will remove it, or put it elsewhere, if anyone is offended by it. No, I'm not making any money off of it, and no, I'm sorry, I can't make you one.

If anyone is interested in closeups of a particular page, let me know and I'll upload them to my scrapbook.

Oh, wow! I've never seen altered books and Labyrinth together before! You are so amazing for doing this!! I love every single page, your drawings are amazing! I can't say just how awesome this really is!

I also love your other works on Labyrinth, and thank you for leading me to read some wonderful fanfics! You rock!

Woah. Like, really, just woah. That is freakin' awesome! Beautiful work, truly!
Do you mind if I sort of copy your idea and make a book of my own? Seeing as you said you aren't going to sell this one, I figured I could try my hand at my own version.

...wicked...truly wicked. This is really beautiful, and my mind is freaking about the amount of time and effort you have put into this. Extremely gorgeous, every page. Though, if you wouldn't mind fulfilling a fangirl's wish, could you please post a closeup on the page with the Castle beyond the Goblin City? That's my personal favorite page. ...Dude, I'm listening to HIM's song Vampire Heart, and it fits this altered book perfectly! "I am the nightmare waking you up from a dream of a dream of love..." Oh, no, not again... *zooms off to write a Labyrinth vampire fic* Beautiful piece, though, I can't get enough of your Labyrinth work!

This is beautiful! One of the best altered books I've ever seen! You could have not included any quotes from the movie or drawings of the characters, and it still would have made me think of Labyrinth.

Whoaaaaaaa... that's so inspiring it's crazy! I used to wish these kinds of things could be sold, but when you see the amount of dedication you have to put into it to have such an insane result, I don't think anyone should even think of selling such a trinket. Wahh... and I only just saw Labyrinth- this makes me wish I'd seen it when I was little, so I could've properly gotten obsessed with it, instead of having the Bowie excuse ^^ Then again, I suppose I did grow up with Dark Crystal, but it'ssss..........not the same thing.
Fantastic job. I really love the idea- it's always a shame to see books go to waste, so this is a pretty nice way of bringing them back to life. I'd tell you which were my favourite pages, but... they're all really unique. Putting it in my favs if I ever need any inspiration!

Wow this is amazing! I've never seen an altered book before, kinda a new concept. I personally can't stand the tought of someone damaging a book but if it was already damaged and going to be trashed I'm glad it can serve another purpose. Those pages are amazing! I can't believe the amout of details and the moveable parts...perfect! So how did you do that? Did you take the pages out of the book and rewove them or what?? And did you do anything to the cover or did you leave it as is??

Oh...my...GOD. That is AWESOME! No, seriously, coolest thing ever! I never thought of doing that, of altering a book like that--! I have to make something like that, I HAVE to. I won't do it for Labyrinth, much as I love that movie, because you've done it and there are so many possibilities-!!! GAH! Oh, I love feeling inspired! I am so fond of books. *sighs*

I love the way that turned out. How very creative! So, how many pages did you do in total? Just those? Are they in order, or random pages in the original book? And you just painted and whatever over top of the original text? Did you glue a bunch of pages together to make it more sturdy?

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

MelissaFindley In reply to dreaming1 [2007-03-06 11:49:54 +0000 UTC]

There are some really awesome books and websites out there that will give you tips and techniques for altering books.

But for this one: yes, the pages are in order. I pretty much went through and just glued like four or five pages together and then the next few, and then the next, Some pages I tore out entirely (it's a neccessary step, or else your book won't close). And some I tore in creative ways (like the page that makes up Jareth's face.

You'll probably want to "prime" each page by painting over it with a thin coat of white paint. I left mine really thin, so you could still read the text, and here and there I masked certain phrases in the book so that they didn't get any paint at all.

There's a lot of other techniques, but we'd be here all day if I tried to explain them. Do a google search for Altered Books, and see what you turn up.

I hate not having more time to spend looking through dA (I shouldn't be here now! I'm only here 'cause classes've been iced out!) - this's an instant favorite. I LOVE the cutout effects - the Escher room, the mask, and particularly the peach, which is genius.
The mask images do strike a note with me - I love the little one opposing "Once upon a time..." in the picture second from the top, left.
The whole thing's gorgeous, it's got to be astounding in person... x.x

Wow- i'm like speechless. This is incredible! You are sooooooo talented and sooooooo gifted. I just have a question though- what exactly is an altered book? Did you like take a real book and cover the pages in it with your drawings and rimestones and stuff? Sorry I just never heard of this concept before.

MelissaFindley In reply to CrimsonCutie [2007-01-23 02:01:34 +0000 UTC]

Try googling "altered book." You'll find some cool sites.

And basically: yes. That's what an altered book is. An old book that's been transformed into a kind of 3D collage/art form.

ok, this is awesome. i wish i had the patience and motivation for something like this. heck i promised myself i was going to start a scrapbook this summer and the materials are still in my closet.
i really like the pages with the goblins on one side, and sarah on the other. you drew them really well. i also like the star pages (and the quotes for it)
i'm probably going to watch Labyrinth now. my ethusiasm has been rekindled ^^

You really just have to dive in and start it. The inspiration is the important bit. I listened to the soundtrack over and over and over again, and kept getting ideas based on it. It sort of drove me to work quickly, and I did most of this over a matter of a few weeks.

👍: 0 ⏩: 0

MeliHitchcock [2006-06-08 02:59:53 +0000 UTC]

You know, you weren't kidding when you said over in the Epi forums that you just got an idea and ran with it! No fear dear for trying anything new, that's very admirable! This whole book is one awesome masterpiece! Just how long did it take to assemble this project?

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

MelissaFindley In reply to MeliHitchcock [2006-06-08 11:21:39 +0000 UTC]

Er... about a week. But I was also working on a bunch of other things at the same time.

I get an idea and my brain just goes WHOOOSH, and my hands and the rest of me have to race to keep up. I REALLY wish I had a camera. I just finished a gorgeous mask that I'd love to share. It only took a couple of days, sadly. I was hoping it would last longer, but... oh well. On to the next thing.

And when it comes to art, I've never been afraid to try anything new. I'm like a kid who sees a new toy: gimmie! gimmie! let me play!

They know me at the craft stores really well. Every month I come in with a new hobby. One month it's altered books, then mask making, then beading, polymer clay, candle making, wire work, woodwork...

What a wonderful project! Even though I have never heard about the movie and I have never heard about a book altered like that before, it is still a great idea

Anyway, as I don't know the movie it does not imply fan art to me, so I can fav it. Because it's good.
