Description I apologize for the following:

The size of this image when viewed in full

and for not uploading it under fan art. Turns out that there IS no fan art section for traditional mixed media type art stuff. Maybe they think no one would put that amount of time into it. I don't know.

Either way, just to be clear, YES this is intended as Fan Art. I'm sharing it here because I know there are some people who would be very interested in it, and because altered books are a hobby of mine, when I'm not painting faerie people. I will remove it, or put it elsewhere, if anyone is offended by it. No, I'm not making any money off of it, and no, I'm sorry, I can't make you one.

If anyone is interested in closeups of a particular page, let me know and I'll upload them to my scrapbook.

This is so great! I love what you've done with it! It's wonderful, it has so many different parts, but is still a whole, and the glitters and the feathers and the faeries and... and... it's just great. I'm very curious as to how the Escher-page turned out. The blue 'Everything I've done, I've done for you'-pages capture the mood so well. Wow. Just great.

Well, the Escher page isn't done yet. When it is, I'll post it. Probably won't get to it soon, though, as I've had about enough of exacto knives this week at work.

I love that blue page. The color here isn't quite as dark as it really is. It's a really stunning, sparkly dark sapphire up close.

This is just soooo utterly beautiful. Thank you so much for sharing it! It's so lovely to see some traditional art from you, and such a wonderful tribute to your inspiration.

And that quote: "you're him aren't you?"
Just... gah.

Someday I'll get a scanner, or a digital camera and upload more traditional art. In the meantime, digital's my favorite medium anyway.

Really impressive and beautiful. All the layers and the complexity shows that it's been really well thought out.

Actually a lot of it just sort of came to me. I'd look at a page and be thinking of a line from the movie, or I'd have an idea for something, and then the page would just sort of assemble itself. I like it when art is organic, and grows out of itself like this.

A lot of it, like the pages with the goblins, or the picture of the castle, was just me kind of doodling around trying to get a feel for the movie, or thinking about Froud's artwork, and then coloring and finally going, hmmm, needs paint (smears paint on page, wipes up) OOOOH neat! Now glitter! Now gold ink! Wheee!

Spontaneous art is good too! Plus, what's really nice is that it doesn't look too spontaneous--each and every thing flows together well while still maintaining its own unique style, separate from the other portion

MelissaFindley In reply to YoakeNoKami [2006-05-24 22:01:11 +0000 UTC]

Well, there was an overall look I was going for, but everything grew from that. Helped to tie it together.

Kind of like the Labyrinth itself.

You've got to admit that the Labyrinth itself is just a bit random. But cool. Very cool.
Also slightly disturbing, but that's beside the point.

Wow! This is quite impressive! I like the words "Lost Horizon" on the front page, for some reason they make me think of Jareth and his Labyrinth.
You really captured the decadence and decay of the film very well! wonderful job!

It's the spiffing part I'm most proud of.

Have you any idea how difficult it is to get a book to spiff? Involves Goblins and hot pokers, and rather a lot of glitter and tuna fish.

Please, don't ask about the tuna fish.

Thanks for the !

....oh. my. god.

I am just...awed. I mean, WOW. This is so inspired! I LOVE it!! It's beautiful and creative.. and... just.... ZOMG. I'm at a loss for words! I can't even FATHOM how much time this took you...

You really MUST post a close-up of the escher room pages when it's finished, won't you? Even unfinished, it already looks like it's going to be amazing! Please do.

Wow, you have no idea how inspiring this is. If it weren't, like, almost two in the morning, I'd be running off to try something creative (although of course it wouldn't be anything even half as amazing as THIS!).

MelissaFindley In reply to MercuryFox22 [2006-05-24 01:23:19 +0000 UTC]

Thanks so much!

I promise, when the Escher page is done, I'll post pictures. And I think everyone should try an altered book. They're so relaxing to do. If you screw up a page, you can always just tear it out!

And they're so portable!

OMGOMGOMGOMGOMGOMGOMGOMGOMGOMGOMGOMGOMGO MGOMGOMGOMGOMGOMGOMG, OH MY GAWD!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! This is amazing...I particularly *love* the page with "You're him, aren't you?" Could you maybe post a close-up of that?

Okay, so this piece is *amazing*. The time and skill displayed (c'mon, that escher room? It's over) is truly inspiring. I love your take on the movie through this book, and since I'm a little (okay, a *lot*) fangirlish. I love this movie, and this is just...damn near rendered me speechless.

Awesome job! I'm so glad you decided to share it.

As you wish: [link]

Someday soon I'll finish the escher room page. Most of this book was inspired by the "Peach Dream" sequence. I wanted it to be very decadent, lots of ribbons, lots of glitter, lots of feathers and rhinestones. I also wanted the sort of shabby beauty of the rest of the film. Different pages were inspired by different things, too. Like the "Stars" page is the same color and glitteriness of Jareth's coat in the peach dream.

I'm really glad you like it. I've been wanting to share it for awhile, but haven't had a digital camera in order to do so.
