Description
FairyEither I mistake your shape and making quite,
Or else you are that shrewd and knavish sprite
Call'd Robin Goodfellow: are not you he
That frights the maidens of the villagery;
Skim milk, and sometimes labour in the quern
And bootless make the breathless housewife churn;
And sometime make the drink to bear no barm;
Mislead night-wanderers, laughing at their harm?
Those that Hobgoblin call you and sweet Puck,
You do their work, and they shall have good luck:
Are not you he?
Puck:
Thou speak'st aright;
I am that merry wanderer of the night.
-William Shakespeare
A Midsummer Nights Dream
Act II, Scene I
Okay, if I add any more to this painting I think I will utterly ruin it. So it's time to let it go, I think.
This is one of my favorite scenes in A Midsummer Night's Dream. It's so playful and flirtatious and fun. Both characters have always, to me anyway, read as a little cheeky. Puck is trying very hard to impress the dewdrop fairy, and she's flirting for all she's worth. If only their respective royalty didn't come along and spoil the fun....
Also, there is not a good place for illustrations that *aren't* technically fan art, so I'm guessing on the appropriate gallery for this.
Edit: Why does dA brighten all my colors, I wonder. Noticed after uploading that a layer had flattened incorrectly. Should be fixed now.
Also, I wanted to dedicate this painting to Josh, and Ryan, tricksters who both exited the stage far too soon.

This is my favorite scene in the play. Well, this and the Play Within the Play at the end. We had such a big cast that we split the First Fairy into about six characters, and divided her lines up between us and ran around teasing Puck. It was so much fun.

. Actually I'm in the middle of a production of AMSND {I'm the fairy
} and the person playing Puck is a female so it would be a little awkard is we were flirting
.
Alright, I'm going to stop talking now. ^_^

I have to say, I'm very torn about the sex of Puck. I love him as a male because of this very scene, but at the same time, one of my best galpals did a fabulous job portraying puck in my school's proformance of Midsummer, but the most annoying thing about that is the AMAZING chemastry between her and the jerk who was playing Oberon, it just opens up the story to and entire new WORLD of possibilites. You seen what I mean? I love this peace (no one seems to draw for Midsummer) but as I said, I'm torn.

THe detail in this blows my mind. I really like your take on the characters as well. No one ever makes the fairy all that interesting to look at in any play/movies/drawings I've seen before so I just love your take at her. I also really like how you gave Puck, my favorite character in most of Shakespeares plays, green hair. Lovely!

You've done a great job depicting these two fae in this painting. Puck looks wonderfully roguish and sly, while the fairy elicits imagery of dew with her pale hair and delicate clothing and wings. Their body language captures the flirty banter between the two quite well, and their expressions are fantastic.

Oh, they are so sweet together, the feeling of the scereny is perfectly captured. You did a great work with the light/shadow scheme, it has this sort of "sun shining through the leaves" atmosphere.

Oh, this is lovely! I'm playing Puck (opening night this evening, actually!) and the girl playing Fairy 1 originally was really cardboard and rather nasty. She caught the flu last week and so Cobweb is doubling for her, and this scene suddenly took on an almost uncomfortable sexuality, to everyone's amusement. It's still my favorite part in the play and I intend to milk it for all it's worth, muwahahaha. I like your interpretation and character designs, too!

Ah A Midsummer Nights Dream. My favorite Shakespeare play and unfortunately one I continually miss whenever it is preformed.
One of these days I'm going to see it on stage and hopefully it will be spectacular!
As for the painting I love the details you put into it. Puck is one of my favorite characters and I love how you portrayed him and the fairy in this scene. And their outfits are awesome!

On the thumbnail in my new deviations I saw the bit of scarf hanging down behind him and thought "!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!" Clearly I should drag my mind out of the gutter!
Tis beautiful as always. I like the rather predatory male way he's invading her space, one foot between hers and one up by her hip. He has rather clear intentions and she certainly doesn't object! And they both have fabulous eye make-up!

I do like this and all of the lovely detail, particularly the moss, and the fairy's clothing and wings. My apologies, I got lost in that sentence.
My only quibble is that the sunlight streaming through the forest behind the tree looks a bit opaque, which kind of crowds the scene, and makes me think of a couple backdrops I was involved with.
