Description
FairyEither I mistake your shape and making quite,
Or else you are that shrewd and knavish sprite
Call'd Robin Goodfellow: are not you he
That frights the maidens of the villagery;
Skim milk, and sometimes labour in the quern
And bootless make the breathless housewife churn;
And sometime make the drink to bear no barm;
Mislead night-wanderers, laughing at their harm?
Those that Hobgoblin call you and sweet Puck,
You do their work, and they shall have good luck:
Are not you he?
Puck:
Thou speak'st aright;
I am that merry wanderer of the night.
-William Shakespeare
A Midsummer Nights Dream
Act II, Scene I
Okay, if I add any more to this painting I think I will utterly ruin it. So it's time to let it go, I think.
This is one of my favorite scenes in A Midsummer Night's Dream. It's so playful and flirtatious and fun. Both characters have always, to me anyway, read as a little cheeky. Puck is trying very hard to impress the dewdrop fairy, and she's flirting for all she's worth. If only their respective royalty didn't come along and spoil the fun....
Also, there is not a good place for illustrations that *aren't* technically fan art, so I'm guessing on the appropriate gallery for this.
Edit: Why does dA brighten all my colors, I wonder. Noticed after uploading that a layer had flattened incorrectly. Should be fixed now.
Also, I wanted to dedicate this painting to Josh, and Ryan, tricksters who both exited the stage far too soon.

This is utterly gorgeous. So beautiful in the colors and shadows. I love the details in the lace and how her stockings are torn.

Yeah Puck! \o/ This is one of my favorite scenes too. I love how it just seems to...roll along? Not quite sure how to describe it, lol. Your rendition here is great.

This is a gorgeous painting of a delightful scene. I think it's good you let it go when you did, anything more, WOULD have most likely ruined it.

I love the facial expressions, and the colouring of the drewdrop fairy's clothing.
I also couldn't help but notice that Puck's eyes aren't quite level with hers... Lovely detail.

Very lovely and appropriately whimsey-fantastical and almost light.

do you suppose Puck and Jareth are related?

Doesn't seem at all unlikely, really.
And in GND-verse, at this point I've several votes for him as Jareth's daddy...

Yes but... Jadis and Puck? I have a hard time imagining that. It'd be like Jadis doing Mr. Tumnus's bad boy black sheep (faun? satyr?) brother

Oh wow, lovely! This is a great scene, and I really love the design for the fairy lady- her hair and the colors are just beautiful! So sparkly! And I totally understand what you said- I always worry about overworking and underworking paintings, but yours always look very finished and professional, while still having a lot of the "painterly"-ness to them, which I really enjoy. How do you decide how much it needs? Great job!

As I told someone else recently about knowing when to finish:
You work on it till it punches you in the face with awesome. Then you work on it a little more.
Honestly, though, it's hard to tell sometimes. I usually keep bouncing around, working on different parts and asking myself "What will help tell this story?" until I can't think of anything else.

Hahaha, that's a good plan! I find that I just never know- I think my work looks sketchy all the time, and though people say they like that, at the same time, I never really feel like it has that "professional" look to it. But I seem to go right from sketchy to oveworked xD b'aw! I'll figure it out one of these times! And one of these times I'll actually manage to catch you Ustream and see you work! Thanks for the tip

Thou speak'st aright;
I am that merry wanderer of the night.
I jest to Oberon and make him smile
When I a fat and bean-fed horse beguile,
Neighing in likeness of a filly foal:
And sometime lurk I in a gossip's bowl,
In very likeness of a roasted crab,
And when she drinks, against her lips I bob
And on her wither'd dewlap pour the ale.
I this so much!!! Truly wonderful.
I pressurised my Drama groupt to do William Shakespeare's A Midsummer Night's Dream instead of some other play. I mean, why mess with perfection?
Even worse, they wanted me to play Titania? Pft. I think I made a fabulous Puck My favourite character ever. Mr mischief himself.

My drama teacher wanted me to play Bottom because he was a jerk and knew that I wanted to play Puck or Titania...
which is how I ended up playing Hippolyta. Some parts I believe girls can play. Bottom isn't one of them.

And the wisest aunt, telling the saddest tale,
Sometime for three-foot stool mistaketh me;
Then slip I from her bum, down topples she,
And 'tailor' cries, and falls into a cough;
And then the whole quire hold their hips and laugh,
And waxen in their mirth and neeze and swear
A merrier hour was never wasted there.
But, room, fairy! here comes Oberon.
This is a wonderful representation of one of my favorite Shakespeare characters in my favorite of his scenes. I ADORE the faerie's dreads, they're adorable. But I must protest a little on the Bottom comment. We did this play in highschool and my friend was Bottom, she did excellently . . . then again we had already used all of our (2) guys for Lysander and Demetrius. Haha. I wasn't on stage for that production but I've since stolen Puck's monologue here for auditions.

if there hadn't been three other guys who were perfect in the part (and far better than I), I wouldn't have protested. I played the Mad Hatter, and a few other "male" parts before. But the guy who ended up playing Bottom was magnificent, and it wouldn't have been as good if I'd done it, nor as funny during the Pyramus Thisbe play at the end.

Oh I completely understand. I have also played male parts before, but there really is no substitute for a god male actor in an actual male role. Haha.
