Lady Rabia is the leader of the Umbrum. I used to believe that she was the biological mother of King Sombra, but then I learned that she isn't despite the fact that in the comics, she claimed to be his "mother". Though I would say that she considers herself to be the Mother of the Umbrum/Shadow Ponies. Sort of like how Queen Chrysalis is considered to be the Mother of her Changeling army. Lady Rabia and the Umbram were created by Emperor Grogar to take control of the Crystal Empire and its Crystal Ponies to keep them from spreading light and love from the Frozen North.Background used:

I did have another theory of why Lady Rabia became an evil shadow pony:
*Once a student of Princess Amore, during the first years when the Crystal Empire was born.
*Betrayed and misguided for being made fun of by her Crystal pony kin.
*Doesn't believe in the power of love anymore; vows revenge after being publicly humiliated.
*Ran away from home only to stumble into a dark cult filled with ponies known as the Umbrum who despised the Power of Love as well.
*Became the leader of the Umbrum and decided to put her plan for revenge in motion.
*Despite all effort of trying to reason with Rabia, Princess Amore had no choice but to place a powerful curse on her and her Umbrum Army.
*With the power of the Crystal Heart, Rabia and her Army are banished down below the depths underneath the Crystal Empire for life.
Not that it matters, either way, your theory is just as good as mine.

Leader of the so called Umbrum resistance.
Fighting to free themselves from the Crystal Ponies' opressive "love magic". There are no boundaries or lines she won't cross to achieve her goal.
Her hobbies include spreading terror on other creatures, teaching the young about the evil ways of the light and quashing anyone who dares to oppose her shadowy ways.
Reports say she is extremely cunning and manipulative. Preys on the innocent and nรคive. Highly dangerous, she is known to assault and murder at will. Has a very loyal following.
Practices beauty and grace, as do most Umbrum. Helps them be effective at charisma and emotional connections with other creatures.
