Yes, that can be tricky to learn, but easy enough once you understand that overworking it doesn't necessarily make it better.
Three things to remember about hair: Always start as dark as the darkest of the shadows in the hair, hair is rarely if ever single strands all going different directions, so using a thicker brush isn't a bad thing, don't try to paint individual strains of hair until, and here is the third: put some thinner, more defined strands of hair around her face and on top of the highlights.
Well, that's how I do it anyway.
