Description I am sorry that my paintings keep coming in such long intervals. Haven't found much time for personal art these past months. At least outside of my sketchbook, which is something that I use daily.
Lately I have felt more and more drawn towards traditional paintings. Their look and feel just seems so tangible to me, and it is something that I would like to recreate in my digital work. This piece is definitely in that vein. Do you guys feel like I succeeded?
It is actually based on a small water colour sketch I did, which you can find here: www.facebook.com/photo.php?fbi…

Will try to be faster with my next piece. Meanwhile, I am posting more of my drawings from my sketchbook to facebook, so feel free to add me there, if you would like to see them.

This is a nice piece. It makes me think of how harsh Winter can be. And yet the stuff we build can withstand those conditions and be there the next year. I like that.

Such a great painting, feeling the traditionally trained painter vibes here. Especially like the reds popping up here and there.

Thanks so much! I've actually had no training whatsoever, be it traditional or painting. But I am increasingly looking at traditional paintings and would like to get my hands on oil too at some point!
Also I made a watercolour sketch for this one first, which still shows through here and there

Take your time. You can't rush art. It needs it's time to flow out of artist's imagination and to idea take physical form.

Thank you! =] I did in fact do a water colour sketch first, but I'd say that the final piece doesn't really resemble water colour. I was hoping to push it more into the direction of oil in terms of how it looks. But I'm definitely not at the end of that journey yet

Any tips for getting such a nice traditional effect? I'm using ArtRage to do that, but never succeeded in Photoshop or even Corel Painter.

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

memod In reply to arisuonpaa [2017-04-01 00:01:53 +0000 UTC]

Hm best is, if you don't think of it as an effect. I didn't use a filter or anything. Instead I looked at a lot of traditional paintings that I liked and tried to understand, how they were painted and how the respective artist placed their brushstrokes, what colours they used and so on. And it also helps if you use some brushes that have a more traditional aesthetic with some irregularity to them. Am still trying to better understand what makes a traditional painting look traditional though!

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 0

crystaleyes909 [2017-03-26 13:58:52 +0000 UTC]

I do like the style, and I definitely think you got the acrylic feel on this with the textures. I can almost see the canvas coming through . Did you use a different brush? Do you do some traditional painting too?

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

memod In reply to crystaleyes909 [2017-04-05 22:00:30 +0000 UTC]

But but but....it was supposed to feel like oil! D: D:

Haha, nah but I'm glad that it has this traditional touch. I really quitel ike that aesthetic. And yeah I'm using a brush set that definitely has more of a traditional feeling to it, with a bit more tooth. Just a bit hard to control them sometimes
I'm doing watercolour sketches in my sketchbook, but I'm afraid that's about the extent of my traditional painting so far. But I'd really love to try oil at some point!

This piece is really great. The texture of the barn looks great. The use of red accents on the boats works. The snow is rather convincing and the reflection is well placed. Also the control of detail across the image is restrained.
