Description Tutorial based on [link]

Manga style watercolor is a simpler way to start because you can usually do your base color and shadows with the same color (just vary the amount of water).

This was done on smooth/hot press 140 lbs watercolor paper over a drawing in waterproof ink. I use M Graham tube watercolors.

The important thing to remember is that with each step/layer I let the paint dry before adding more. Once you get the hang of that you can add in blending with water.

When I do the highlights with white watercolor it's usually pretty thick, with hardly any water added.

If you look at some of the artbooks some pictures say watercolor, and some copic marker, and some use both. But sometimes it is hard to tell. I can't get that kind of detail with markers. Tsubaba and XXXholic covers definitely look like marker. Chobits used a lot of opaque watercolor.

Cheaper watercolor will probably do the same things. The difference is in how much they will fade in sunlight and how concentrated they are. I don't think Ecoline is bad since I'm pretty sure it's what John Howe uses too.

Just don't get cheap stuff like the sets you use in grade school. Windsor newton makes expensive paints for pros but also pretty good ones for students. Sometimes you can get them in sets. You can mix most colors but it's nice to have burnt sienna for skin.

I don't know, I've never tried those. a tiny bit of red, yellow and water will work too. You can add a teeny teeny bit of blue or purple so it's not too orange. Just experiment. Burnt Sienna is kind of reddit brown that makes good skin color when watered down.

Oh, wow!
Watercolor is one of those media that just makes me want to turn around and walk away. But, I've been looking to challenege ymself lately, having been given some Prismacolor markers and trying them out. Seeing the nice watercolors here on DA has made me want to try it. Can you recommend any good but inexpensive supplies? I know a bit of watercolor goes a long way, so I woudlnt' mind spending a bit on good paint, but will a pad of Bristol or Vellum work just as well as the hot press? Also, do you have any recommendations on brush sizes or waterproof pens? The only waterproof ink I have I would need to use a quill pen with, and that can be infuriating.

Sakura Microns are waterproof.

I don't think bristol will work for watercolor. Even if it's thick it ends up looking kind of washed out. I would just find watercolor cheap watercolor paper you can and experiment first. If you buy certain paper online it's half what it is in stores. Windsor Newton paints are good. They have a student quality set which is cheaper but still pretty good. M Graham is what I use and probably harder to find, but damn nice.

If you haven't used a quill pen much you probably don't want to use it on watercolor paper. I used to mess up so much I'd have to use white out so I just photocopied the drawing onto the wc paper. Which is also a good idea if you're just starting. You could make several copies and try different colors without worrying about ruiing your drawing.

Thanks for posting this up. I have really really nice watercolor pencils I've never used because I've got no idea how to work with watercolors (in color at least). Maybe now I can start playing with them and figure some things out.

Much appreciated! *adds*

MeredithDillman In reply to postcognition [2006-12-26 04:06:19 +0000 UTC]

Oh uh, any 140 lbs hot press is good. Make sure to use waterproof ink if you are doing it over ink.
