Description
Snow and Frost - 11x17 watercolor painting
I'm so happy this is finished! It took a long time (2 months) and I don't usually paint this large. There's a lot of tiny details, like painting all those snowflake patterns on clothing dress individually. I was afraid it would never be done!

I think this has become on of my favorite images! Especially since winter is right around the corner.
I'm currently learning about watercolor, do you have any tips about the media?

I have written two books on painting watercolor
The main thing people have trouble with is colors mixing when they don't want. Let each layer dry before you add more paint.

Thanks I appreciate the help. I've actually begun to enjoy watercolor. I admit it was difficult at first

It's hard! I was afraid to use any dark colors at first.

I feel the same and I'm currently working on a self-portrait, I'm afraid I have the skin tone wrong and I'm worried about messing it up

Those teases you were posting on Twitter had me really intrigued. Everything about the final painting is just so gorgeous! I'm absolutely in love with the composition and colors. I wouldn't have the patience to paint all those snowflakes. And in watercolor! So many lovely details to look at!

About 15 years ago. I really hated watercolor before I saw anybody paint detailed fantasy illustration in it. So I was really into CLAMP (and thought they used watercolor. which they don't) and wanted to paint like them. Then I saw some of Nene Thomas's watercolor art at a convention, and that was when I figured out that watercolor didn't have to loose and abstract.

1) I absolutely adore CLAMp especially Magic Knight Rayearth
2) What do you mean by loose and abstract?
Personally I love drawing with pencils though recently I've gotten into painting but I can't wrap my mind around all the detail you put into your art. How to you get the colors to stand out and "pop?" I read your process is using a scanner? I don't understand. I'm always trying to learn something new. Right now I'm exploring oil paints.

If you do google image search for watercolor painting you'd get the idea. The popular style of watercolors in fine art is less detailed, painted quickly, and more about letting the paint flow all over. tonyconner.com/2010/01/07/wood… www.watercolour-painting.com/p… www.mymodernmet.com/profiles/b…
One thing that helps is to let layers of paint dry before adding more. That way you avoid colors mixing when you don't want them to. It's less frustrating to learn wet effects later after you've already got some skills. Some paints also have more pigment in them so I need to use less to make it bright.
Scanning is just after it's done so I can get my print file and put it online.

Oh, now that makes perfect sense. How to you scan something if it's larger than the scanner? Just a hypothetical question? I know one would be to take a photo, but it just doesn't show all the detail that well.
I've never painted with watercolors so this is new information for me. And I recently saw Frozen and Rise of the Guardians, so I absolutely Love the Snow and Frost print!!

I have to scan left, center, middle and then use photoshop to piece them together. It is actually a giant pain to do, but I can't afford a larger scanner.
