Description lovely Jude, because Sherlock Holmes and the epic bromance are still dancing through my brain.

i thought about using the full-front view from this photo shoot, but then i decided that this shot was more interesting, and gave me better shadows to play with.

just a little reminder: these hatching exercises are done by digitally tracing photographs that are probably not stock photos. i did these because i've got artist's block and i don't want to lose all my ability and training just because i feel like i can't draw lately. the aim with these is to pick out contour and shadow (and to maybe get better at the techniques that form the foundation of inking, which i suck at).

posting a little step-by-step for this piece, so that you guys can get some idea of the process i use when i do these hatching exercises. it's basically the same as if you're going to free-hand instead of tracing, but since the object here isn't to get better at general facial anatomy or proportion, i just skipped the step of laying out the sketch on my own by tracing.
