Description
In the spirit of sharing my other arts and crafts once a day, here is Mimi.Mimi started life as a Mimi Merize doll made by Novi Stars. (Nova stars are made by the same company that makes Bratz dolls, but they weren't very popular and so were discontinued.) I for one love Novi stars, as their eyes are the same shape as how I draw mine.
As always here is what she looked liked originally:
As you can see she was covered in very vivid purple stripes, so I spent hours sanding them all off. I knew that underneath all that paint was a very cute body mold.
I also ripped out her antlers, pulled off her glitterly lashes and completely repainted her eyes before replacing the eyelashes with some fake human ones trimmed down to size. Her face up was completed with Mr Super Clear, pastels, Prisma colour pencils and also acrylic paint. I also painted daisies all down the right side of her body, as I hate her outfit so she is naked now instead.
She went from an Alien, into a cute little fairy. Mimi is one of my all time favourite custom dolls and I've been asked to create another one by my Sister in law.

Absolutely! I love doing it. I'm not very good at sculpting human forms, so customizing preexisting dolls is great.
It really depends on how far you want to take it though, I use a lot of toxic sealants and stuff so I bought a respirator to stop me from dying of lung death. If you are just using paints though it is super straight forward. You use Nail Varnish remover to take off their make up on their squishy heads, but if the doll is solid plastic, nail varnish remover will melt them.
It's very rewarding though!

Awww well if i ever have any questions i have someone to ask!
I do have a question though and i was wondering what kind of doll would you recommend using? A lot of customisers use monster high dolls (which i dont have, i only have old bratz dolls) and i was just wondering if you have any recommendations cause other than that i think im all set (i just need to order sealant online and order a few other tools)

I just accidently deleted all my text I wrote out ;_; OMG I'd written so much.
Bratz dolls will work fine. I personally dislike their faces but my Sister In law uses them a lot. If you don't mind customising your childhood dolls then go for it.
There are 4 types that I use, although I'll try customising anything once!
First up is Monster High, they are crazy popular with customisers because they come in so many varied colours and molds. I happen to love their faces as they are very detailed and sculpted. I love dolls with cheekbones. They are definitely my favourite. Each character has a different sculpted face, which is what sets them apart from the other brands.
The second one I can recommend is Ever After High dolls, they are made by the same company that make Monster High and generally come in human skin tones, which is much rarer in Monster High. They have much rounded faces than Monster High though, and they all share the same mold. I worked on a Danerys from Game of Thrones today one one of these.
Another doll which is quite easy to get hold of at the moment are the My Little Pony Equestria Girls dolls, but they aren't for everyone. I like them because they have very flat faces which means you can decide what size eyes to give them. With other brands you are sorta limited to what shape the eye lines are.
Finally, there are Obitsu. Obitsu are anime dolls and come in lots of different sizes, from tiny to massive. You want to stick to ones with Vinyl heads if you are customising. They lack the detail of the other dolls, but if you are a weeb like me they do have their charm. I have a chibi one called Karen she is around 11cm tall.
Heres a picture of all the different doll brands I mentioned.
There are some other brands like Moxie girls stuff, but I wouldn't consider going any lower than those. The dolls you can pick up cheap, that are imitations of Barbie, Bratz ect are terrible quality.
I hope that helps.

ooooooooo yea when i was a kid i loved them but as an adult i understand their flaws ahahah
either way im gonna try buying a monster high doll for now, their angular faces suits the character im trying to make :00
also do you know any good places to get doll hair or a rerooting tool??
i mean i can do it myself but i was just wondering if you know any online stores

If you are customising, I'd recommend buying a doll from ebay rather than brand new. Is there a particular doll you are after? (I have a box full)
There are 2 places really in the UK to get rerooting stuff from, MyLittleCustoms or RetroDollsUK. I've used both, but generally prefer Retrodolls.

aah i got a used one from amazon for about £4 is cool
i don't have paypal yet so i don't think i can use ebay cause it's paypal only?? or smth??
I was looking for a doll with pale pinkish or purpleish skin, like so pale it's almost white but with a tint (i would resort to spray painting if i could be bothered)
ahh i saw retrodolls, they didn't have much wigs but they had a rerooting tool, i could make one myself but it seems too complicated for my dumb brain and i'm not sure diy dad is willing to give up a drillbit

Lets have a looksee, For dolls with pale pink / purplish skin there is Draculaura, Elissabat, Gigi Grant, (all have light pink) Ayumi Haunterly (More blue skin), Jane Boolittle (darker purple) Twyla (lighter purple) Ari Hauntington (Translucent purple skin) or if you just want flat out white skin there is Spectra Vondergiest. I don't have spares of most of these.
Careful using spray paint, I find it doesn't work well on Vinyl heads, it's best to gently lay on acrylic paint in thin layer.
Monster High wigs are hard to get hold of, and there is another method if you don't want to use a rerooting tool. My Sister in law is a rerooter, and she uses a needle and uses a loop method. It locks the hair in and prevents it from ever falling out. The rerooting method I find doesn't work as well, although it is much much less time consuming. I've never really gotten on with the rerooting tool myself. I tend to use a needle too.
You just need a massive doll needle.

Aaah thank you so much i screenshotted that to keep in mind i got a draculaura doll cause she seemed close enough
Alright! I've seen different methods to repainting skin so im probably better off with acrylics (having a mum who's a part time artist is great)
Ah my mums also the sewing queen so she'll most likely have a needle i can use for that
so i have one last question and i dont know if you're experienced with this or not but say now i wanted to make a modification to the doll like add horns or a tail what kind of putty or anything like that would you advice using (i got some fimo and some milliput from a local craft store but idk what's good for it)

Having artistic parents is great! You are very lucky.
There are several methods like you said. You can use Milliput but I find that quite hard to work with, but it doesn't need sticking on at all as it self adheres. You can also use super sculpy or fimo like you said. The trick to attaching them is wood glue. It's like beefed up PVA from when we were at school. You craft them to fit where you need, then bake them separately, and then finally glue them on. I have a Munny (customisable toy) that an ex boyfriend made for me over 12 years ago which has sculpty horns glued to its head and then painted over. They are still well attached!

yeaaaa although i do have my mum nagging me to do "real art" but that's fine i tend to ignore her when she says things like that
aaah yes i know wood glue, it's the glue that smells pretty bad or is super sticky whichever one they have it in college but im pretty sure we'll have something similar in the garage or i can order it online, im just trying to assemble everything right now :00
