Description I get asked all the time, "How can I turn my passion into my living?"  In fact, I've been asked to speak in public many times about this very topic.

This is my formula for building an online audience for your artwork, using social media.  If you're here on DeviantArt, perhaps much of this seems redundant.  On the other hand, perhaps not.

Feel free to share, especially if you have a budding artist in your life who wants to profit from their talent. With free tools at our fingertips, there's no better time than right now to be a self-representing artist.

This is all very good advice. I finally decided I'm going to try to sell my art and as far a getting the word out this is great advice. I really needed it. I'm selling my paintings but I felt that wasn't enough and I myself have started to look into leatherwork as well. I used to make bracelets back in high school that I would burn ornate picture and designs into, but I know if I wanted to pursue that more I'd need the right tools.  :/

Since you are a very good self-taught leatherworker yourself, any advice for the basic tools, dyes, and finishes I should get to start? Nothing fancy like yours. lol I'm just looking to do the basic works on bracelets and handbags.

Thanks!  Tandy Leather offers great basic starter kits, actually.  I use their tools and dyes, myself.  Here's an example: www.tandyleatherfactory.com/en…

I need to start watermarking more of my stuff.

Though will note to folks, if you want a less "heavy" program for color correction (though it doesn't offer as many options) Paint.NET is good for things that just need quick touchups with nothing fancy.

Good advice, especially the part about giving it all time, and taking a day off sometimes. That's the hardest Thanks for sharing

You're welcome.    This is just the basic stuff really...if I tried to write down all my thoughts on this, it'd be a book.

Great advice.. and definitely something I'm trying to achieve (turning my passion into my living!)
I recently created a facebook page for my art.. (www.facebook.com/LindseyColeAR… but finding out, like you said, that the empire is not built in a day. (But that's ok!)

Thanks so much for posting this. It's reassuring to know that my time spent focusing on my art on social media, is not wasted time.. but part of the process. And specifically that what I'm trying to do has actually worked for others like yourself! Very encouraging! Thank you!

I'm glad I could help!  When I first started speaking at public engagements about this topic, I was ~amazed~ that so many people don't know this stuff.  But it took me a long time to figure it all out, and it involved a lot of experimenting to see what worked best (like my mask making process...it evolved) so I guess it makes sense.

It's definitely an experimental process.. finding out what works best for what you're trying to accomplish. For me it's even a little bit of trying to figure out what it is exactly that I DO want to accomplish (in terms of getting my work out there and why.) So it's definitely an interesting journey.. but one that I'm enjoying for sure!

Thanks again for the advice! I've always enjoyed and admired your craft!
