Description
The film was supposed to be released in theaters but because of the COVID-19 pandemic, it instead get streamed on Disney +. Yeah, not that much of surprise from my perspective. When I first watched the trailer of Turning Red, I thought it would be your average teenage girl doing teenage thing with other teenage girl. Even when she turn into a red panda, she still act like a teenage girl even if I would give it a chance at least. But now the film had already been streaming on demand I have to watch it.Right of the bat, I really love the animation and the quality of the movie that Pixar created. I don’t know why some people hated the style, it looks great. The music are really good with the Chinese culture with some hip hop in it. The movie is pretty much about growing up by following with the story name Mei Lee, who’s going through her life while trying to control her red panda ability by being calm. One day, there’s a concert going on that she and her friends wanted to go, but her mother, Ming, isn’t please with it. Basically, it’s kinda of a mother and daughter relationship movie, but I can safely say that Turning Red is a better version of Pixar’s Brave (which I’ll make a review on that in another times). Even though it’s one of those teenage girl story, this story is more than that. You see, Mei is trying to be a perfect daughter for her mother since she see her as a perfect daughter and the red panda quirk that she have is actually the generation that been passed down through the family’s ancestral history so she can either keep the quirk or not. As an overall story, it can kind of be slow at the beginning but, it pick up later on in the film. I’ve already talked about the animation and just finished talking about the story so, how’s the characters? Well, I have a nitpick at least two characters and to start of you have Ming. I’m not really a fan of overbearing parents since she wanted her daughter, Mei, to be perfect. The part where she spy on her daughter had made me question, “why?” I don’t hate her or anything but, I can’t say I love her either. Then you got Tyler, Mei’s bully. I understand that this is about Mei and her red panda quirk but I wish his character would flesh out more like what made him as a bully. I can go on with other characters like the grandmother but overall, the characters are enjoyable and likable enough to watch the whole way through.
Turning Red may not be Pixar’s best film that they ever created, but it’s a colorful film that have you say, “wow!” Plus this film is funny and doesn’t go too over the top with the story. Rather you like the style of the movie or not, this is a must watch for anyone especially the young teen girls. Trust me, if you want a good and a powerful message for your teens about being yourself, this is the one.
