The winding path spiraled downward into the abyss. The air was hot, dry, and stagnant to the point where breathing made a person rasp and choke. The vile stench of sulfur and brimstone was overshadowed only faintly by the smell of death; old death. The kind of assault on the senses that an old mausoleum would produce if it were still being used. The silence was broken occasionally only by whispers in a foul tone and in unknown tongues. You did not have to see the bottom to know that demons dwell here. Ancient demons that had torn through many lives and many souls. I was expected, and they knew I had to go down. So they waited with the patience that only immortals have the luxury of possessing.
