Description "Spread your wings, fly up in the air, and color the skies..."

Listened to this while making the picture: [link]

Okay...Someone should really teach that bastard how to make proper backgrounds now...
Aaaanyway...just another practice with coloring and backgrounds. Also, my second take on the Aurora Borealis. (this is the first one: [link] ) Overall, I'm satisfied with the outcome, I think this is the first time I tried a shading like this on a character.
By the way...it's the Metamorphox again, this time in his summer coat arctic form. Maybe his winter form could've looked better, but I don't think it would've been appropriate because of the character's nature. I really enjoyed making this picture, and I hope you also enjoy watching it.

Mellesleg... ő ismét a Metamoróka, ezúttal a nyári bundás sarki róka formájában.

Good work! The composition is great and the pose/expression conveys the feeling very well! <3

As for critique:
The big issue is, however, that you seem to be extremely inexperienced with the placement of shadows -which is, together with anatomy, the very basic foundation of making a truly good image. (Except if you draw heavily stilized, which, of course, is also fine.) Shadow and contrast is what gives objects their mass and form.
[link] <- The underlying idea is that light-rays fall straight. So that means that if you have chosen a light source (and you must do this before you start painting!) you absolutely need to stick with it the whole way through. For example in this picture, the only light is coming from the aurora. This means that no light can possibly hit the front of the ice OR the front of the character. (Besides reflected light, but with a weak like like an aurora this would be only a very subtle effect.) It is really, very important that you are consistent. If you pick a light that comes from an 'extreme' angle (such as behind the character or below it etc) then you cannot break with it half-way through and draw light where there cannot be any.
To make this easier it is a good idea to imagine laying a 'grid' (like it's used in animation and computer modelling) over the thing you're drawing and get a feel for the 3d-object that it is.

So yeah, that is the thing you should work on before doing anything else. On the side you might also want to consider doing more studies of anatomy (namely getting familiar with bones structure), even if you choose to draw mainly cartoon-style this will help you alot with getting more complicated poses right. And: If you want to learn how to paint certain structures such as ice or fur and not only get the shading but also the color effect right, you should do life-studies. Nothing will better teach you how to draw nature than nature itself.

Wow, never expected a critique so long and detailed until now. Thank you very much!

Yes, I really am inexperienced with shadows. When I first tried doing shading, I didn't have a clue about what am I supposed to do. Now, if I get the light source right, it turns out slightly better, but yeah, there's still a long way to go.
To be honest... originally the aurora was not part of the original plan, but when I started drawing the background, it seemed too...empty, and I was like: "why not give it a try?" That's how it turned out. Originally I tried to make it look like the main light source comes from somewhere outside the picture (like the Moon), but you're completely right, I should've modified everything according to the new idea. Thanks for the explanation, it really gave me some ideas about future projects. *saves the linked image to his tutorial folder for further reference*

Also thanks for the suggestions on anatomy and life studies, thankfully I have a few images in stock to use once I get everything in order, and once I have the time to do some realism practice (my job often gets in the way ). I'm aiming for a cartoony-style with a bit of anthropomorphism, so it's gonna be necessary to make the characters look more believable. If everything goes according to plans, my characters are going to be animated, so there has to be quite a few tests before that (people I'm working with on drawing projects tend to say that it's hard to draw in this style. ). It won't be easy because of the lack of...necks. I'm trying to keep your words of advice, and thanks again for the detailed critique.

SO MUCH BETTER.

I just finished watching Brother Bear... somehow the background really fits the theme of my evening.
That ice is impressive. I always have trouble with things like that, especially rocks but you've pretty much nailed it.
Pretty good shading too and you've done awesomely with no outlines.
Overall brilliant work!

Brother Bear...good memories. I should also watch it again, I really like the Hungarian version.
Thanks for the compliment, and I'm glad I succeeded with the wall of ice. It took a few hours to figure out how to do it properly, and It's good to see others also see it...uhm...icy enough. I also often have trouble making rocks, and ground, and soil...especially soil.
It really was my first test without lineart, and I didn't intend to do it like this, but after I started coloring it, I thought: "Why not?" So I ended up doing a character without outlines.
Thanks again for the long comment and the compliment.
