Description
This is a cover I did for Aspen Comics' Fathom book...I'm not sure what issue its for but it should be out in the next month or so I think. This is actually the first piece of finished comic artwork I've done completely digitally. Drawn on a Cintiq, then colored mostly on my crappy Graphire(I'm saving up for a Cintiq 24HD). Hope you like!Related content

I love the musculature her stomach! I mean that sounds totally random, but it's really well done. I can't draw abs at all without them looking really odd hahah.

Thank you! Its a fine line to walk when drawing female anatomy I think, because if you go too defined it can look weird, like you said. This piece was much easier in that regard, because I colored it myself and could choose how the shadows describe the musculature and not just hope that the colorist understood what I wanted from the line art. Thanks again for the kind words!

You've got it exactly! The way you used the shadows to define it looks really amazing. I can't even imagine what it's got to be like if you CAN'T add the shadows yourself and have to let the colorist handle it. Talk about leaving your baby with a stranger! And you are very welcome!

Yeah, sometimes when you're collaborating it turns out better than it would have, had you done it all yourself, but other times there's some information that gets misinterpreted or just interpreted differently that you would have hoped. I've been pretty lucky with most of the people I've worked with over the years, but I'm a control freak so I like to do it all myself

Hah. Don't blame you in the LEAST. Not that I can do a good job of coloring my own work, but just the idea of leaving it to someone else is odd to me. Guess I'd better get used to it though if I'd eventually like to get into comics.

I am really digging the color palette and this character, I almost want to see her dive into water. Nice job!

Thank you! Yeah, I always take forever to color things because I'm kind of particular about the palette...I've still got a long way to go before I can properly do the things I'd like to with color, but I'm getting more comfortable each time I color something new. Glad you like!

She looks soft while being (very obviously) strong. Overall I like that theirs action while the heroine looks very feminine, at peace and wholesome.

Thanks! Those are definitely the vibes/looks I was going for with her. Those are all the qualities I personally ascribe to her as a character.

Looks great Micah! All this talk about Cintiqs makes me want to get one, but I need money to finally get to meet you and other cool people at Comic Con. So I guess I win either way. lol

While your shading and anatomy are impeccable, I can't help but feel that the pose is just a tiny bit stiff.

the 24 HD is AMAZING. You'll never go back to drawing on paper.

Yeah? Have you used the 21UX as well? That's what I use at work...I was thinking about just getting that one, but its only 500 buck cheaper, and the 24 is larger, better screen, and has that useful-looking adjustable arm...Seems more than worth the extra dough.

trust me, the 24 is a huge improvement on the 21. I tested the 21UX out before buy the 24. I liked it, but having the option of the swivel arm is amazing. I can lean the screen over the edge of my desk so that it fits right down into my lap, much like my drafting table. Some say they like the rotate feature on the 21, but you can easily rotate the screen in photoshop or manga studio so easily so it doesn't even matter. Save the cash for the 24, and get that one. Best thing I've ever bought.
