Description Study of a photo by Irving Penn(not sure who the subject is). I wanted to try some different things stylistically with this one...I'm a big fan of Sergio Toppi's work, and I've always wanted to try some of the distortion techniques he uses in his work. I simplified the shapes in this but still tried to keep an element of realism. The color scheme is analogous with a complimentary. Hope you like! check out my blog where I'll be posting the majority of work like this: [link]

Aw man, I adore this. My own style has always been recognized (as I'm told by others) for having very sharp, dramatic lines and angles. Lately I'm getting more into high detail paintings, and the more realism, the more I'm losing that flavor, or so I fear. This is a great example of how one can keep both qualities - very inspiring! I'd love to see you toy with the technique in future.

I can tell - Your work is very broad in the best kind of way, and I'm sure your knack for really stretching your arms with style and technique a big aspect of that. I think the pieces in which you've gone out of your norm have the most energy and life. This is still one of my favorites though :'D Awesome work as always, Mr. Gunnell!

Thank you very much for that, its nice to hear! I do enjoy "designy" type work, so maybe that shines through in those pieces. Thanks again for the kind words!

I'll keep and eye out for more work in this style. It has a certain period advertizing poster feel to it.

Hmm...When I think of Pop Art I think of "artists" like Andy Warhol and Roy Lichtenstein...However, I'll try to take that as a compliment

JwichmanN In reply to MicahJGunnell [2012-01-24 17:18:21 +0000 UTC]

the color palette +more minimal strokes to render the figure made me think of pop first.
postmodern might be better choice

Mine too...I never really took a class dealing with modern art, thank God...I remember one design class I tried to take at community college that I dropped out of because of how ridiculous the "art" was...Gold plated urinals are not art in my opinion, nor are cans of human excrement. That professor disagreed.

JwichmanN In reply to MicahJGunnell [2012-01-24 22:38:13 +0000 UTC]

gold plated urinals?! i need me one of those! potty in style
ugh i suffered through art history which ran from stone age cave paintings all the way up to modern stuff, each class was 3hrs at a clip, 2x week. i barely made it conning the teacher into doing verbal finals cause i knew i wouldn't pass a written. lol i had to take another art history elective that dealt with modern sculpture and we(me and my friend in the class) made many arguments about why stuff wasn't art. Teacher said hey those "artists" many big $$ making boxes with lights inside, if you can do it, then you should. we just said, why? it's not art!

I'm with you, at a retail job, once i had to clean up another persons poop, and it was thoughtfully put in the shirt pin can and left in the dressing room. poop in a can is not art or an expression of anything, other than maybe arrogance and disrespect!

i did kinda have fun with op(optical) art. using lines and colors to make patterns and images that mess with your vision. little tics and dashes that don't look like anything up close. but stand back ten feet and you get a picture.

MicahJGunnell In reply to JwichmanN [2012-01-25 04:39:30 +0000 UTC]

Nice! I've cleaned up barf before at my first job at a fast food place, but never poo. yuck.

I think I'm fairly open to other art styles, but it needs to require some real skill and imagination, and not just a plaque on the wall telling me what it "means". In my opinion, art should be able to be appreciated without having an explanation and shouldn't be considered art simply because its placed in a gallery. If you drew a realistic drawing with poo I'd be impressed

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

JwichmanN In reply to MicahJGunnell [2012-01-25 16:00:58 +0000 UTC]

yeah that story is better told over beers, but suffice to say I didn't stay at that job for much longer. That still haunts my dreams.

I agree. i've always gone with the general public consensus. If a large group of people can't see it and understand or get the meaning then it's not really art. As artist's we kinda get shafted overall. You or I will spend our entire lives honing and perfecting our craft, learning skills whereas some shmo comes along and poops in a can and calls it his view on american politics and sticks it in a gallery with a 20,000$ price tag. um not quite!

I guess i'd like more qualifiers(i suppose those therein lies the problem) but just because i can hit pots and pans with some sticks doesn't make me a drummer or musician. really it's almost insulting to the people that have actually put in the time and work. I guess there will always be standard and extreme categories of things.

drawing with poop? thats one stinkfinger that would never go away lol

JwichmanN In reply to MicahJGunnell [2012-01-26 21:24:10 +0000 UTC]

although i've been on the receiving end of it. when i was going through my first fine art school if you wanted to draw comics and the teachers found out you'd basically get black listed and shunned by the staff. to them anything other than dedicating yourself to fine art practice and study was not art. sad but true.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

MicahJGunnell In reply to JwichmanN [2012-01-26 22:13:22 +0000 UTC]

Yeah, I got that too in some of the art classes I took...It was completely looked down upon by the snooty professors. I think that's changing at least to a degree...There are a lot of great illustrators that have been doing cover work in comics for the last few years and I think that's helped their overall perception in the fine art world.
