Description
I took some picture of my old charcol/pencil drawings done in school while I was back in Taiwan for Christmas holiday. I drew much better back then. And this is one od my favorite. It's a drapery study homework. I spent about 6 hours right before handing it in at the class, using my bed sheet wrapping around a short stool. My teacher liked it so much that he took a picture of it to use as his teaching materials for years. I didn't understand why back then, but years after, I look at this picture, and realised it is probably one of the best drawings I have ever did.
Charcol Pencil and white pencil on grey tone paper. Original size 22"x28"

Wonderful drapery study, I have a few of these in my gallery too. They are such a wonderful practice for accuracy and sensitivity in drawing!

Becaue it's not fun to just do still life, and I don't have chance to draw from life nude models nowadays. Moreover the reason that I went to an art school was that so I could do "cartoony stuff" well. That has always been my goal, and I still have not that much interest in doing fine art, or I would have taken fine-art as my major These drawings were done in classes that wasn't required for me to take. I took them because I want to bring some of this into my cartoony drawings, which is also harder to do in my opions than having life references.

i agree its much harder to make stuff up than to draw from life.. you need to understand how it looks without seeing it..

It is really a great study. To capture folds of material so well is quite a job. I suppose you don't appreciate your work when you are doing it because you look at all the negatives. Lovely light representation.

I was wondering what this photo was of, and then I read your comments... and then took another look at the category it was submitted in. Holy crap. Little wonder your art teacher loved it, I love it too!

Wow. Such dramatic lighting.
What I like most about this is how it looks as though a figure is beneath, crouched and clutching the fabric, even when it's not.
Very interesting.

it looked a bit like da vinci's drapery study, at least it reminded me of his style.. great work. the shading and gradient from dark to light is great.

Now I'd go against your saying you draw worse now, but I guess that wouldn't be useful anyways. It is indeed a beautiful piece of artwork. The folds are smooth and subtle, and the shading and highlighting is absolutely wonderful. Great jo
