Not that I didn't spend ages trying to actually paint it.

It's not cheating to use the tools available to you effectively. What really matters is the end product after all. As my teacher once said, no one really cares how many layers you used to make an image, as long as it looks good. If you can achieve what you want in less time by exploiting the tools at your fingertips, well, that's a valuable skill, especially in this fast paced world.

Of course, it's a different story if you're talking about doing stuff manually for study purposes.

I do get what you're saying, but I guess my point is that exploiting tools in that manner really doesn't help in the development of technical artistic skills- after all, it's not every time you can use Photoshop tools to enhance your image tenfold (you can't get 'lucky' every time), which goes to show that there are flaws in your technical ability if you have to solely depend on the tools to create that kind of effect.
I'm not against using these tools to change an image at all
(indeed, many industry professionals use them heavily on a day-to-day basis because they are shortcuts and save time), and certainly, efficiency is key if you are working on a specific project on a tight deadline as well.
But don't you think it's better to develop good, solid skills before taking the shortcuts? I'm sure it would allow you to make decisions regarding tweaking easier as well.

Seeing as I was not on a tight deadline (apart from finishing before New Years xDDD, heh), and this was created as a personal artwork, I guess you can see why I was pretty disappointed in myself.

I will have to disagree; I consider knowing how to use these tools a technical artistic skill for the digital artist, just maybe not in the traditional sense, which is what you are talking about. You needn't be getting lucky if you're using them with full awareness and discretion. It would just be a part of your artistic workflow.

Sure it's always good to develop solid traditional skills, indeed that's what I'm trying to work on myself at the moment (I've been trying to get my contrast up for years). As I said, it's fine if it's a study/learning exercise. But you needn't beat yourself up about it too much, especially since you make such pretty images already =w=

regarding the cheating part, im not sure if its true or not, but sometimes when u make drastic-ish changes to curves, contrast, hue, saturation or whatever, you lose a bit of 'fidelity'? or you lose colour range. no idea how to describe it. its especially true in 8bit images, which is most of the time. its just something i noticed.

Hmm that's interesting
I've never actually noticed it before. (give me an illustrated example? 8D)

i'll tell you where i notice it most. say i has a render straight out of maya. with a sick floor which has like a light green to blue gradient or something IONO. if i bump up the contrast and saturation or curve it up or something, you'll be able to see noticeable banding on the gradient if u knows what i means. this also kinda happens when u go 'auto colour' 'auto contrast' 'auto tone'. and its more noticeable with less dramatic gradient changes.

OHH as in the transition between colours is not very smooth? That kinda only happens if you bump up the contrast x over 9000 to the point where you start getting eye burn.
Also I never go auto anything

Haha I guess the reason why I never auto'ed stuff was that it never looks quite the way I want it to when it gets auto'ed.

Are you referring to the 'contrast, colour balance, levels, gradient, etc.' part?
Lulz.
Well there's basically some sliders in photoshop where you can tweak the contrast, colour and value. The gradient is just some tool where you can get one colour to gradually change into another colour (or nothing, whatever your preferences are).

Because of how drastically it changed the picture in the end, I called it 'cheating', but note that you still do need some skills. No amount of tweaking is going to fix a technically lacking picture. I wouldn't call it a secret though
You'd be surprised how many pros use those adjustments.
I think a little bit of tweaking is absolutely fine, though.

I was pretty disappointed with myself after 'cheating' so I'm trying to not use so much of the adjustments (actually learn how to do things properly before I take the shortcut).
I've also refrained from abusing the smudge tool

Anyway, hope you learnt something!

yes, those would be they x)

hahahahaha i definitely did! i think i have an idea of what you're talking about just from using Gimp and Corell Painter. and i understand your addiction to the smudge tool all too well D'x tis a harsh mistress xD

tweakings totally fine! hahaha its so good to see an artist who legitimately wants to improve themself!! ur a major beast in my book keep up the great work!! i cant wait to see what else you churn out!!

(and ur welcome for the watch! kinda forgot to actually write that too >.< )
