Description Hey, all. I recently upgraded from Paint Shop Pro 7 (which is over a decade old ) to Photoshop CS5. Thus, I was *very* uncomfortable coloring this. Still learning all the new shortcuts and everything. Hopefully, I'll be a quick study and get comfortable with the program soon. Hope you like it!

Note: If you know any cool Photoshop coloring tutorials, please link them here. They would sure be helpful (especially about using the lasso and pen tool. Softening edges too. 'Def need to get better at that. >_< Thanks, y'all! )

Thanks! I haven't drawn too much lately. ( I gotta remedy that soon >_< ) You'll be at LA Wizard Con? Hmmm... Maybe I'll see ya there. Right now I plan to go to (not as an artist, but as Press) SDCC and Long Beach Comic Con. I'll decide on the other cons as I get closer to them. ^_^ Again, great to talk to you and I'll keep in touch. Cheers!

In regards to Photoshop coloring, I can help you learn whatever you want to know about...I'm pretty good with the software.

As for tutorials, good ones are everywhere, especially here on dA if you just search. I'm well past my Photoshop beginner days that I couldn't recommend any tutorials now...most of the sites I learned from are either offline or dramatically different.

As for the art, it's great. You're the master of drawing the cuties, that's for sure. The colors are flat but they're neat and effective. What you might try is scanning one of your drawings, shaded the way you normally do it with Copics or however, then adding flat colors on a layer above set to "Multiply". The concept of coloring and shading is the same traditionally or digitally; the difference is only the methods involved.

No problem. Really, the best way to learn is to put new layers on top of your art and play around with the brushes, filters, blending modes, etc. You can always undo and save as.

Looks good from what I saw.  I do have a question about the more recent versions of Photoshop, though.

One reason I switched over to Paint Shop Pro was that it more closely resembled the interface from the old Corel PhotoPaint program (which was easy to use).  I tried Photoshop back in those days (late 1990s) and found it a bit difficult.  Have they done anything to improve that?

MichaelCrichlow In reply to YusakuJon3 [2011-04-19 18:16:27 +0000 UTC]

I've disliked the Photoshop UI for a long time. Preferred Paint Shop Pro by far. However, I recently upgraded my computer and my version of Paint Shop Pro wouldn't even run on Windows 7! (Oh noes! >_< ) Thus, I was forced to upgrade and join the others in the 21st century. Honestly, it's not as bad as I thought. While VERY different (none of the keyboard shortcuts I know carry over) the concepts (the stuff I know how to do) *do* carry over. It's just a matter of figuring out how to do all the things I did in Paint Shop Pro...in this new program.

My big things were scroll to zoom (which they have now; I hate that 'Ctrl +' and 'Ctrl -' (to zoom in and out) stuff) and a few other things. It's a totally different User Interface, but it's one I'll have to learn now. I do feel it's less intuitive, but hopefully I'll get comfortable with it soon.

I've gone as far as Paint Shop Pro 9, but I still have an old XP machine that I do most of my work on.  It's barely compatible with the newer laptop that I brought (at a time when I thought I was going to be starting a new career which required one), but it forces the system to reset itself to a "basic" setting whenever I run it.  PSP10 and later versions may be compatible, but I've hardly had the funds to upgrade while I'm still unemployed.

If I do start a new job soon, I may be considering upgrading so that I can switch back and forth to the laptop when I need to.  Later on, I also plan to upgrade the main PC, and Win7 may be the only thing available by then.

apawhite [2011-04-19 05:27:26 +0000 UTC]

Congrats on the upgrade. It shouldn't be too hard to pick up on how to use the Pen and Lasso properly even without a tutorial, just by playing around with what shift-/ctrl-/alt-clicking do, how Paths work, and the different variants of each tool (although I almost never use the magnetic lasso tool, and I can't remember ever using for the Pen anything but the regular one and the Convert Point Tool). You might want to add the Paths window to your workspace, though.

(And nice work on the pic too, obv. That anime experimentation's definitely influenced your style a bit. Now please excuse me while I gorge on Portal 2.)

and for what it's worth, I hate the pen tools in photoshop. I use a piece of software called Adobe Streamline, but I just recently found out it doesn't work with Windows 7. So I'll have to learn Illustrator or the PS pen tool.

As for pen tool tutorials, there's quite a few out which babble a lot, explain you multitudes of stuff and make you read through a shitload of explanations. I personally prefer this one , which - while seeming to bore you to death while you do it - has the nice effect of making you redo the actions you will need more often, well... more often. And vice versa. You should check it out, it's a tutorial I recommend a lot.
To do the one justice I learned from, you could also check out this , which does have a few, but not too complementary explanations. Basically, read through this one, work through the first, and you should be able to handle the pen in no-time!

That being said, I think it's interesting how you kept a lot of aspects to your style exactly the same, even though you were switching to another platform. I like how the signature looks totally pityful in this one, though... XD And it's actually the first time I noticed that your shadows don't really seem to have too much consistency between your artworks... any intention behind that?

Either way, keep up the great work... and have fun with your new toy
