This reminds me of a lecture given by βFind your love in Japanβ, who was saying that translating βKamiβ as god, and βYokaiβ as demon, has been a bad equivalence. Using the paradigm of Western Animist language, particularly that of the Celts and Germans prior to Christianity, Kami are better described as High Fairies, and Yokai as Dark Faeries, although such scholars as Saint Mungo sometimes describes them as the paganβs βlittle godsβ, so is that a conceptual catch 22, or were the Christian chroniclers barking up the wrong Ent from the beginning?
Anyway, I got to thing of the old West European concept of βTrollβ, but in Shinto Animist terms. Trolls are the spiritual manifestations of Stone Archways, both Natural and Artificial! Thatβs why they love stone bridges and caves. Just one possible example, but I am not sure if they would be High or Dark by Shinto Standards, but certainly Dark by most Europeans.
