Description
After watching this video by Drawlikeasir: www.youtube.com/watch?v=DHzJMa…I've decided to design and develop my very own semi-consistent art style that would be instantly recognizable as mine, relatively undemanding and therefore suitable for reuse in a variety of media (hopefully including animation).
Here's how I'd define it:
My style (which I'd call MikeStyle) opts to be abstract and at the same time precise in its own fantastical way.
It deliberately uses a limited 6-bit color palette, with the colors being the closest approximation of the literal interpretation of the color seen/imagined in this particular spot, including abstract interpretation of stuff like diffuse lighting or even minor things like contour.
The palette in question has the most blue colors in it (if we're counting purples, teals and greens), since it's my favorite color. There are no proper colors for terran skin types, so earthly colors are used instead as the closest approximation. Green colors lean towards depicting properly vegetation in full sunlight. The palette also has plenty of pink and red tones to depict stuff like lips and the inside of the mouths of various creatures.
The lines are mostly solid 8 pixel airbrush that can be of varying colors and can even change color mid-line to better reflect the abstraction of the color that was supposed to be in that particular spot.
I draw the terran face by arranging a sphere, cube and pyramid until it fits the face I wish to draw.
The main focus is on getting the eyes right: upper lid, bottom lid, half-circle for an iris, tweak it to match reference.
The eyes are the parts of the face that are the most likely to receive black outlines due to their intensity, while the nose is most likely to receive outline that blends with the rest of the face, because it's not as noticeable to me when looking at a person's face.
Also, the eyes in my drawings are intended to be a quick way of reading the character's nature: if the eyes have a glint, then the character is alive; if it's a dot or otherwise simplistic, expressionless eye, then it's not a person/human.
Secondary focus is on the lips and the fleshly parts on the inside of the mouth (the palette has a lot of pink and red tones for a reason)
Other than that, I shade the base of the drawing to give it depth and make it something other than flat color.
That's about it.
You can expect me to practice and further develop this art style as I make more drawings.
See you then! ^^
