the funniest thing is that in a comic he really killed half of the universe just for please lady death

And now I scientific correction from a non-Marvel fan: That's not half of the universe, that's the Milky Way galaxy.

So, I guess what took Infinity Gauntlet 3 panels to do took MCU's Infinity War 1 and 1/2 hours?Β  Time differences aside, I'm legitimately surprised to see they actually kept the "Kill half the universe" plot point made it over to the movie; kudos, MCU.

Not crazy about his "justification" for killing off half the universe, while its obvious the writers wanted to make him more compelling and less two dimensional, it still comes off as weak and shitty.Β  Why not just use the stones to keep the universe from supposedly running out of resources?

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 3

Animefan-279 In reply to GreyhawkTheAngry [2018-06-19 02:36:44 +0000 UTC]

The real problem is that we never actually see his side of the argument. The writers, or director, or editors, or a combination seem to forgo the "show don't tell" philosophy of filmmaking, and it's something that the MCU is in desperate need of.

ManiacalSpark In reply to GreyhawkTheAngry [2018-05-10 19:34:59 +0000 UTC]

It was better than him having a crush of the personification of Death and killing everyone just to get a date with it.

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 2

Animefan-279 In reply to ManiacalSpark [2018-06-19 02:39:21 +0000 UTC]

Actually, that could have been a better way of making him compelling. Think about it, he's a deformed man with a nutsack of a chin. They could have made him a villain who simply wanted to be loved for he could never get it from anyone, not even his own mother. He kills half of the universe as a sign of faith to his love, Lady Death.

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 0

GreyhawkTheAngry In reply to ManiacalSpark [2018-05-10 20:49:40 +0000 UTC]

Is it?Β  I'm not so sure about that anymore.Β  Hell, they did hint at it in the first Avengers movie, in the extra scene where the alien says "To challenge them is to court death" and then Thanos shows his fugly mug for the first time and he grins at what the dude said.

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

GreyhawkTheAngry In reply to ManiacalSpark [2018-05-10 20:54:29 +0000 UTC]

The restaurant scene was an in-joke, I think they changed their minds on what direction they were going to go in the years since the first Avengers.

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 2

Animefan-279 In reply to GreyhawkTheAngry [2018-06-19 03:08:06 +0000 UTC]

Actually, the MCU isn't nearly as well-planned as Kevin Feige wants us to believe. The original plan for Avengers wasn't to have Thanos in a post-credits scene. That was Joss Whedon's idea. They didn't plan on Captain America 3 becoming Civil War. They pushed that out because of Batman v Superman. Even when CA3 became Civil War they still didn't plan on Sony letting them use Spider-Man. They didn't plan on Thor Ragnarok becoming a wacky comedy. They had a much more serious film in mind for that entry. Heck, I firmly believe that for years, with each film Disney releases, Marvel Studios has to shift its plans around because the writers are always going to have rewrite the future films because there's no way they can predict what the final film will end up like.

TAGQcomic In reply to GreyhawkTheAngry [2018-05-16 17:10:11 +0000 UTC]

Not to butt my big, fat, ugly head into a conversation I was never part of, but I was never under the impression that the MCU was going to use Mistress Death as a character and that the "court death" line was just a little nod for the comic fans, since they're the only ones who would have known and cared who Thanos was.Β  I'm inclined to say "court Death" was more of an in-joke for long-time fans and that the shwarma scene was a call-back to an earlier scene in the movie that any viewer could understand in one sitting, but I guess that's bordering on semantics.

What's not semantics, however, is that I think death-worship would have been a better motivation for Thanos than saving the universe from itself.Β  I haven't seen the movie, but Thanos has never been altruistic enough to actually help anyone.Β  He's smart enough to recognize that resources are running out and that people will eat themselves to death...but he'd probably just grin at that fact and move on with his day; I think the closest he ever came to a heroic act was dismantling Annihilus' "Galactus Bomb," but I think even that was partially motivated by self-preservation and partially by him not truly understanding what Death really does and doesn't want for the world.

Between this and Ultron in the second Avengers movie, the MCU sounds like it's going down a route of making the villains too "nice."

Don't forget Vulture. Sadly they never showed him actually using the money he received from his black market to benefit his family.

GreyhawkTheAngry In reply to TAGQcomic [2018-05-18 00:57:42 +0000 UTC]

I'd have been fine with "Death-Worship", woulda been close enough.Β  Then we wouldn't have been getting these morons with "#ThanosDidNothingWrong " horseshit.Β  While most of them are just trolls, there are enough people that believe this sort of thing to concern me.

That was exactly my point. Like, if he thinks overpopulation is the problem (It's not actually a real problem, it's the rich hording everything) why not just triple the number of suns and habitable planets? Boom, problem solved. And when the population gets too big again, just wake up, snap, "Boom. More suns and planets, I'm going back to bed."
