Description
Maybe I'm just feeling nostalgic or just complaining about nothing, but I remember a time where zombies were actual walking corpses, as opposed to random pedestrians covered in dirt and blood that just run around making snarling noises.Art © Me

Sure, zombies got less awesome over time, but it's NOTHING compared to vampires.

Actually the first zombiesΒ to hit the big screen( Night of the living dead) look completely normal and didn't haveΒ any dirt or blood, but some were naked.

What moron ever said zombies were intelligent? They're animated corpses, no souls, no brain activity at all, just walking bits of decomposing tissue.

Personally, I think it's a rolling pattern of "horroryfing" becoming "familiar" and then "friendly." Vampires too were once only known as monsters, and I image other mythological/folklore beastsΒ have gone Β the same way. Hell, it may have started happening even to c'thulhu and co.
Β
One of the few times that didn't happen was with dragons, as in the middle ages they were just scrappy little beasties, and then Tolkien made them into intelligent god monsters and even then they've gone down the same path as the aftemtioned vampires now, although with a slightly better time of it.
Β
So mostly I'm waiting to see what's next in the horrifying stage.

When it comes to the horror genre of games, movies, etc, I'd say that choosing the zombie on top is a (Puts on sunglasses) DEAD RINGER. Β YYYYYYYEEEEEEEEEEEAAAAAAAAAAAAHHHHHHH!!!!!!!!!!

simply put, the zombie genre is more dead and rotting than the zombies themselves.

so 1-vampire from "lord of the night" to "lord of sparks"
2-zombie from "living cadaver that eats the livinds" to "meat canon for a ramdom survivor"
so what is next a "werewolf" turned into a "cute puppy"?

I believe zombies are now used to illustrate a lost of humanity so that's why they look more human to show that the characters are killing people.

I see what you're saying and you make a good point, but when someone like me sees the Walking Dead (the show specifically, the comic doesn't really have this problem), they feel like they're watching a soap opera with zombies. Β I personally like zombies to be target practice that fight back.

The show is like that since zombies were done to death. "Zombies were a old hat now they are a scrap of an old hat that was eaten by a bronciosaurs." Ben crowford. I don't think I spelled the dinosaur's name right.

Your not wrong, its now all this rage zombie craze that I'll admit was great at first but has now quick degrading into a cliche of its own. Personally I find the Walking Dead is the only series to get the balance right.

i watched a certain zombie movie where zombies ran after you, i was like, what the hell, aren't they supposed to be slow?, next i saw some other zombie movies, they barely looked dead... so i went back to the movie that made me love zombies to begin with...
the remake of "Night of the Living Dead", now that was a zombie movie i could live with n.n

I think it's to make the spread of zombies more logical if you saw a green guy without an arm you would shoot them likely if not because of zombies because of fear but a slightly pale guy would be that odd people would think he was emo and the speed is to make them more threatening if they walked so slow the infection or voodoo would have more trouble spreading.

sioSIN [2013-02-17 00:18:45 +0000 UTC]
well i guess its because there are two different views of zombies.
1: voodoo zombies that have rises from the dead because of some kind of evil magic or something, such as the above zombie
2:there are the virus zombies that were infected.
i think it came down to the virus zombies because modern times try to make it seem like it could be a real life thing, and in modern movies, it makes more sense that we made an antidote that went wrong, and ta-da! zombies..i dunno, i personally dont mind the virus zombies.

I easily understand the appeal to the original, grotesque zombies, but when you think about it, the newer "zombies" (I don't prefer to call them that) are much more realistic. An organism dies when it is incapable of functions necessary to "live," so realistically speaking, a corpse cannot come back to life without means of organ regeneration, which isn't apparent in most cases, or "magic." Infected "zombie" humans still have all the organs necessary to survive and allow the parasite itself to control the body of the host without it falling apart or the zombie itself shattering.

(I wish I could edit my own comment) I see zombies as a form of old horror, no longer seeming to be entertaining, or scary for that matter, I would like to see more people expand the idea of cyborgs, human splicing & eugenics I think that would be far more scarier than zombies.

If I can clarify this for you: While this is true what you said, zombies in the old days were about as fast as an ice cream truck in a snow drift. And all they ever said besides brains was, "Uuuuuuuuuuuuuuuh." To me, neither of those factors are very intimidating.
Controversially, modern-day zombies (mutants) are just about the same as the old ones: deformed, dangerous and dead, trying to chew whatever their unclean hands on. I mean, they're still actual walking corpses. People just wanted to give zombies a makeover so they appear scarier.
Oh, and plus they're as fast as a bloodhound hunting on steroids. Which gives you more of a reason to FUCKING RUN. (Screaming and snarling would also be unnatural for a "random pedestrian.")

MichaelJLarson In reply to psychonator17 [2013-02-04 18:55:07 +0000 UTC]
So... The makeover was to make them all grey and covered in dirt/grime? Although you do make a very valid point, I honestly can't see why making zombies less rotted and more, "pedestrian" would make them scarier. However, I do agree that running zombies are FAR more intimidating than the shuffling kind, but I wish they would try to make the running zombies actually look like, well, zombies.

Ever seen "Return of the Living Dead?" Its zombies are totally gnarly-looking AND they're fast.
That movie is also where the whole "BRAINS!" thing comes from.

Very nice one. Last unliving thing I considered a Zombie was in "Scooby-doo on zombie island". The zombies lumbered slowly as they should. These days we have "infected people", who run around and barf all over you.

I think zombies have taken a more science-fiction route, rather than fantasy, and represent fear of disease/epidemic rather than fear of the unknown as they used to.
