Description

I just got a layout table for Christmas and so I wanted to test it out  So I chose to redraw an old, old picture xD And this was one that I was really proud of back when I drew it, so I drew that one ^^

At first I wanted to draw it the same way as the first time, but then I flipped the picture, just to see how it would look and I thought it was so much better And then I decided to draw the 2Y-versions of Sanji and Zoro, because it fits the redraw-theme and I don't draw them in that way often x3

Hello, I'm from to critique on your artwork ^^

First of all, I want to point out what I really admire about this piece the most:
The anatomy of the two male characters looks really nice and generally correct to me ^^
The leaves of the trees look good: they aren't too sparse but also not overdone, they're just right! Great job!
The sunset in general: the sun looks so nice and warm and also the sky is drawn very well: the transition from orange near the horizon to blue is very smooth ^^
The background in general looks really warm and nice
The pose of the two together looks good and I think this would also work out that way in reality.

Now, what to improve on? I don't have much to say about that but I found some minor points
Just as the person before me said, the colors look a little bit muddy. Instaed of shading with blacks and greys, try out to shade with darker hues of the same color (i.e. the hair: for the blonde maybe use some orange and for the green hair some forest green hue)
Add more highlights to the hair! Hair is generally shiny and adding some small highlights would add more texture to it.
I'm a little bit confused because the hair on the legs of the blonde guy stops very abruptly. I also believe that both of them would have hair on their arms too (as guys normally have hairy arms and legs). If this was your intension, ignore this point but to me it looks more like you forgot to add it ^^'
The water looks very flat since there is only a straight line. Water is usally wavy and yeah...I think adding some waves and drawing a wavy line instead of a straight line would make it look more realistic ^^

That's all I can say about it. The drawing is really good, keep up the good work!

Thanks very much for your feedback! :3 I really appreciate it!
I'm actually practicing shading atm, so thanks so much for the critic there! Also the idea with the background is cool, I'll think of that next time!

I find that when I'm looking at a piece of art I consider well-made, it's never simply a single aspect that I find appealing about it. There's always a combination of elements that come together to form an ice cream sundae or fruit salad of artistic expression. Perhaps there's one element that draws my attention over others in a given piece, but it's never the one thing alone that makes me call the picture "good."

With this picture, what immediately drew my attention was the negative space formed between the two characters. It makes for clear, distinct silhouettes that delineate the characters and avoid unnecessary overlap and tangent lines. I also find the coloring particularly impressive, as the colors capture the light from this angle well. As we are essentially on the "dark side of the moon" over here, this side should be draped in shadow. Only a little bit of sunlight around the edges of their bodies gets reflected while everything else is darkened in tone.* One potential issue I see is that the colors used for the shading may be a little too "muddy". They look like darker, more saturated variants of the base hues. What might be worth your while is to try experimenting with different hues in your shading, adding colors other than black in order to fit the tone of your piece. I think some orange or yellowish shading might have worked a little better here, mirroring the colors you used to render the sun. I'd recommend attempting this coloring change in all areas of the piece, including the characters, the clouds, the ground, the water, and the foliage.

Since the characters aren't wearing much clothing, the anatomy is on particularly nice display. I'm fond of the way you drew the elbows and knees, as they show a strong understanding of how the upper arm connects to the lower arm. Though I don't know the measurements of these characters, I do have to wonder if Sanji's foot is really that big compared to his hands. It looks close to accurate, but I get the sense it's a little on the big side. I also get the sense that the heads are on the big side, but there it feels more intentional since big heads are a staple of the anime style.

Aside from the shading issue I mentioned earlier, I really like how you drew the plants surrounding the characters. They have a real organic quality to them in the way they look and the way gravity affects them. I thought they might be tree leaves, but then I realized that would mean the trees are about as tall as the characters. So I'm not quite sure what type of plants they are, but they definitely fit the beach theme and add an interesting neutral color to offset the tone. I also didn't miss the way you framed the image like a postcard, using the extra space to have the characters emerge out of the picture. It's a nice effect, though it does feel a little weird that they get unceremoniously cut off at the legs before completely leaving the frame.

The last thing of note is the water behind them, which I find to be a nice painterly rendering of water, even if it does come across as a little rough. I think a greater amount of detail and time would have turned it from a B+ to an A+. One thing I would fix is the black line that separates the sky from the ocean. It divides the entire picture in half and is positioned right near the center of the image, making it distracting, and I don't think it's needed to separate the sky and ocean colors.

*If you're interested in pushing yourself further with this picture or ever consider a 2nd redraw of it, one exercise I've found to be useful is redrawing it from a different angle. It forces you to consider how all of the interconnecting pieces exist in three-dimensional space, lighting and all. Try it with this or any other of your pics if you're interested.

I hope you find this info useful. Make the most!

Hey there! Thank you so much for the feedback! I really appreciate it! :3
I actually took the shading colours from tha background, but obviously they where still too grey ^^" So thanks for that critic, I'll definitively think about that next time!
Also thanks for the anatomy and background criticism! It'll help me a lot!
