Yeah I believe Piccolo would have been a great father! I mean, he practically raised Gohan, Goten & Trunks and they turned out just fine!

I just feel that he would be one of those dads that would have an idea for their child's future and would basically force them into it. Unfortunately I couldn't come up with the word for someone like that so I had to settle for "abusive"; granted it doesn't quite fit but there ya go.
Perhaps this comic will change my opinion of him.

But that argument doesn't really fit Piccolo's profile since he never objected to Gohan's chosen life style aka being a scholar. He even told Gohan when he first took him that he could become anything he wanted AFTER they defeated the saiyans (which was logical since they DID need his Gohan's power)and that was when he was still supposedly evil.
The only parent I could think of that fits your description would be his mother, Chichi. Having a child's future planned out for him and to force them into it-even if it was with good intentions -was exactly what she did, to the point it got annoying.
And furthermore even Goku,during the Cell games, forced Gohan into a match even though he didn't like to fight. It was Piccolo who had to remind him of that.
Piccolo isn't anything near 'abusive', he's just strict and there's a difference.

I agree on the whole Chi Chi matter! She never even wanted Gohan to train even though he was doing so to save the world because she thought that he'd become too much like Goku. I just wonder why she never put as much effort into Goten's studies...
