Description
Sudan was the last known male Northern white rhino, a subspecies of white rhino along with the much more abundant but still threatened Southern white rhino. He along with the last two known females lived at the Ol Pejeta Conservancy in Kenya whete they were cared for by keepers and escorted 24-7 by armed guards to protect them from poachers, who were responsible for the rapid decline and ultimate demise of this subspecies and rhinos in general. A leg infection caused his health to deteriorate for weeks up until his euthanasia March 19 2018. With his death, the only hope of survival for his subspecies is in vitro fertilization of eggs from the two remaining females with collected semen into the wombs of female southern white rhinos, but the technology required for this to work is still years ahead of us.
