Description This is a scene from The Dresden Files book 6, Blood Rites

Harry Dresden, Wizard and Private Detective runs into some vampires who have seriously thought out their strategy.

His main defense has always been his shield, an intangible barrier of light and force which can deflect anything from bullets to claws.

...It was never designed to stop heat.

"The napalm-jelly splattered against the invisible shield, gallons of it, and the fire clung to it in white-hot glee. Its mindless fury seeped through the shield and flowed onto me.
It hurt. Oh, God, it hurt. The fingers of my left hand were the first to feel it, and then my palm and wrist, all in the space of a second. If you've never been burned, you can't imagine the pain. And my fingers, where millions of tactile nerves were able to send panicked damage-messages to my brain, felt as if they had simply exploded and been replaced with howling agony."

In short it left his hand a mixture of black charred flesh and bloody meat.

The photo background was taken from Gman, the model is me, the flames were taken from a photo also by Gman, and the shield is my own creation made in Autodesk Maya,

All these parts were then compiled and edited in Photoshop.

It's the wrong hand. Dresden burned his left hand. The bracelet is on his left hand. Other than than, awesome work.

A really cool piece of work Mike, I agree with Tavorna about the flame, it should look more like a flaming stream striking his shield but using what you had you really did capture the intensity of the moment
The one thing I noticed though. . . it looks like you have Harry using his right hand for the shield. But it's on his left wrist.
But that is totally minor compared to the overall awesome of your work. I can't wait to see the animation.

XD Its hard to tell I'll admit, the shield blocks everything.

Keep an eye out, in about 10 weeks I'll have finished what I hope to be this scene filmed and special effects completed including animated burning hand. I'm doing this for a project on special effects and composting at college.

Yowch! That excerpt made me cringe.

You're looking very intense there in that photo! I like how you've done the shield. While it still looks 'solid' enough to be protective (as a shield should be of course!), while still looking energy-like. You've put all the different parts together really well to form a coherent image!

My only critique is the fire just doesn't look quite right. If you look at images of say... a flamethrower in use, the fire looks much different. That's the kind of effect I'd expect. I do understand how difficult it can be to get the effects you want when using stock images/photos!

Overall, awesome stuff! I think I see a trenchcoat too - double cool.

Yeah the fire was a pain.

This is actually concept work for an upcoming animation where I intend to do just this. Composite a 3D recreation of my own hand over my real one in footage, and animate it so that it burns and chars. In that case I'll be simulating the fire in 3D as well so it will stream correctly and splash over the shield properly.

So it will be this, from first person, animated/live action footage.

And the "trench coat" is actually that epic coat you helped me order for my formal, which unfortunately never arrived on time. DAMN I love that coat.

Wow, I can't even imagine doing that kind of animation, hehe! Sounds like it's gonna be really amazing when you finish - good luck with it!

Oh man! THAT trench coat?! I never ever got to see it! ....one day...! I'm off mid-June - late-July, we should do something - city or something maybe. Been WAY too long! Maybe you could wear the coat... it's winter after all, so that's a good excuse, lol. I remember how expensive it was, so good to hear you love it! Definitely makes it worthwhile.
