Description
Once upon a time, there lived an old dollmaker, all alone in his workshop by the lakeshore. Everybody knew that he was a recluse; an old hermit who didn't like the company of people.

But it was not true. Once, in his younger days, he had loved a fair maiden with all his heart, and she had loved him so. But she was not permitted to meet him because she was of the nobility, and he was just a common dollmaker. And so, their sad fairy tale ended with his fair maiden taking her own life.

Ever since then, he had closed himself in his hut, making dolls all his life. He never sold them; he just kept them by his side. But as he felt his death coming nearer, he began working on his final masterpiece--his legacy for the world to see.

When the people came after he had died, they saw a huge squarish statue wrapped in simple rice paper standing proudly in the middle of his cluttered workshop. Curiously, they peeled back the paper, and gasped in awe.

It was a magnificent clock, carved in the finest dark wood, its lacquer gleamed as though it was freshly-painted. The intricate carvings seemed to move and change as their eyes skated through the masterpiece.

As they stared in silent amazement, the clock stroke noon. Deep bells echoed within and filled the workshop. Somewhere, the aching song of a musicbox started to sing, in an old love song very familiar to their ears.

There were two small doors on each opposite end of the clock. Slowly, each door opened, and out came two exquisite dolls, probably the finest ones he created. One was a fair maiden, with hair of gold and eyes of deep azure, and the other was a handsome man, with dark hair and verdure eyes. They had gentle longing looks on their faces, and their eyes glowed with love for each other as they reached out across the clock to touch each other, and to dance until time permitted them to.

"Precious as the morning light
Reaching for the stars in sight
Someday when we both may meet
Heaven's Hollow moon we greet

To forever we shall dance
If only time'd give me a chance
I'd dance with you, O love of mine
O until the end of time"

And so the dolls danced to the tune of the musicbox. The people who witnessed it soon after wiped tears of sadness and gentle regret; and yet, a smile was on their faces. For these dolls shall dance and love each other until the end of time--long after the clock stikes its final hour.
