Description
Ted sat on a log with his Milotic named Mara beside him as the sun slowly hid itself behind the distant trees. The water on the lake made an almost perfect reflection of the beautiful sunset across the lake. Mara lightly nuzzled Ted's side. He looked back at Mara and let out a smile, Mara promptly wrapped herself around Ted on the log allowing herself to cuddle him warmly with her pseudo hands. They blushed as she lightly nuzzled Ted's face while he lightly stroked her cheek back in a loving fashion. They gazed at the sun's beautiful rays and the cloud's luminescent silver lining, spending their time cuddling away the last bits of the evening sun as it slowly disappears beneath the tree line. The lakeside reflection presented to them was simply beautiful, just like the love they have for each other.Tools Used:

I LAV IT! Β Β Β Β Β Β Β Β Β Β Β
I forgot to ask one of the most potent questions to learn some good art! (And i forgot to ask until i saw this! XD)Β Β Β Effects. Specifically the details such as the water effect and the logs. Color and shade is pretty easy, but flat color and shade makes an image lack in appeal. I can do basic detail to an extent. So the detail i am interested in learning the tools and methods to draw are: The trees, log, and water.Β Β Β Β Β Teach me sensei! :3

Thank you bro!
And yes~ Effects, details and refinement are the difference between an 'Okay' work and a "Fantastic" one.
Alright I took a while to think of what to type but here goes~
Trees. I started with a blank colour and i stroked in a lot of lines (and by a lot i mean a hell lot, every single little tree top spikeis a stroke)
Then behind that thick opaque layer of tree i stroked some translucent tree tops to give the illusion of distance. And ontop of that i added 2 clipping layers, highlight and shadow. In highlight i stroked similarly with a lighter colour of low-medium density with a medium soft brush (refer to picture) and for shadow i took a very soft biggest airbrush and lightly painted the bottom part with a very light shade of almost black dark green, then ontop of that i used a smaller airbrush and stroked vertically to help with the tree appearance. Not only that i shaded the shadow with more intensity overall further from the sun as part of the 'overall tone'.
Log. Not too hard really. i started with a base plain colour, then i took some darker colours with a medium hard low density brush to stroke sideways to create the grooves, you can overlap and with a low density brush you have some tolerance for errors, but too low and the groove lines will lose its definition and crispness so you have to try and experiment. You want to try to make some areas a bit more dark than the others so that your texture has randomness in not just the micro scale but the macro scale. Next you just do the same thing with the ligther colour, though avoid painting the lighter tone directly over the dark areas as you would neutralize the contrasts. Partial overlapping is good because the contrasting colours still show. then next you add your usual shadows that you usually do. Note also: for the inner log you should use a seperate base layer to help make it easier when shading so it doesnt spill over. You can see my older workΒ streetdragon95.deviantart.com/β¦ and you can see clearer example of the log. And for the thickness of the bark you can use a separate layer ontop because you don't want the patterns of the wood to interfere with your ring pattern there.
Water. Possibly the hardest one. Well i first started by painting a huge square and taking the basic tree line drawn above and flip it at the edge of the water box (very tansparent dark blue, play around with colour and opacity till satisfied) vertically to make it a mirror image. After that i took the blur brush to blur the tree tops until i just cannot see the outline of the treetops clearly anymore (essentially making it a blury mess) then once you've done that you take a new layer and stroke the tree's colour with a medium hardness low density brush to make the ripple effects. Same applies with the sun, and anything you need to reflect. Make sure that the scale of the ripple pattern gets smaller the further away it is and bigger as it nears. You can draw additional light horizontal ripples on the water using ligher and darker colours if you wish for more detail (or a rougher water) And for the riverbank i used the land colour and roughtly coloured a blurry darker bit to make it look like its underwater.Β
Hope this helps! I'm sure there are more sophisticated and advance techniques out there that I still have to learn so be open minded to others too

Wow that helped a ton! So what i got from it was that it basically just going over the flat color with light/darker shades while using a lower density brush! Β Β Β Β Β Β On the other hand, how do you copy and stuff so that you can-Β wait. Never mind i just figured that out! XD
Thanks for the help! :3Β I think that just about covers it.Β Β oh wait! No it doesn't this is the more technical things.Β Layer modes. What do they do exactly? I have messed around with them but.... still can't seem to put my finger on it...
π: 0 β©: 1
Mikapoofs In reply to Xylek-Clemmens [2014-01-14 00:23:55 +0000 UTC]
Glad to hear that! Well the layer modes basically determines how the layer's colours interact with the layer below it. Uhh.... take a certain colour, and colour various shades of it from white to lets say max blue then to black, then make another layer with the same thing except its red, then you try to put them ontop of each other, also try messing with the opacity and see the different results! Cause frankly im not very sure how to exlplain.Β
luminosity works best for highlights
multiply works best for colour tinting i think
binary colour is useles
screen is... i never use that
overlay is... not sure how to explain....

hmm... well thanks! Β I asked some one else how they get thier effects and such. He sent me a SAI file and i basically looked at the layer and turned them on and off to see each layers' purpose. :3Β helped quite a bit.Β Β I noticed that he used a yellow luminosity layer. i tried usingΒ a luminosity layer but when i turned it on it made everything just disappear on the luminosity layer. :/Β Β doesn't really matter that much tho'. You can get pretty far with normal layers.

Mikapoofs In reply to Xylek-Clemmens [2014-01-14 00:29:59 +0000 UTC]
Lol well luminosity layers are meant to be used as the shading layer onto colour below it. They are not meant to be used as normal layers. Also they are very potent, use low opacities on them if not everything will be too bright.

yeah

well it basically means you wont lose the saturation of the layer below it.

Yes it is really nice but use you can use it with normal layer too just in case the colour intensity becomes too overpowerful, you can use normal to help tame tie colours too :3
